Lifeguard

Distinguishing features of the class: Under general supervision of either the Swim Assistant, Athletic Director or the School principal, the lifeguard on duty ensures the safety of patrons of the Mount Vernon City School District pool by preventing and responding to emergencies. Does related work as required.

Examples of work: (Illustrative only)

• Maintains constant surveillance of patrons in the facility; acts immediately and appropriately to secure safety of patrons in the event of an emergency;
• Provides emergency care and treatment as required until the arrival of advanced emergency medical services; Completes records and reports;
• Adheres to posted job schedule;
• Enforces and adheres to all policies and procedures;
• Attends all staff meetings and in-service trainings;
• Completes additional duties as assigned by the Swim Assistant, Athletic Director and/or School Principal.

Required knowledge, skills, and abilities: Must have the ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations; maintains a safe and controlled environment; must have skill in the application of life guarding surveillance and rescue techniques; must have knowledge of CPR and emergency medical procedures; must have the ability to follow routine verbal and written instructions; must be able to prepare routine administrative paperwork; provides quality customer service; acts in a professional manner at all times; presents professional appearance and attitude at all times; has a good understanding of facility characteristics, rules, policies and procedures; honesty and integrity; punctual when reporting for duty; reliability; must be able to lift or drag 100 pounds, good judgment, tact and courtesy and physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

Acceptable experience and training: Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma issued by the New York State Education Department.

Special requirements for appointment to this position. Certification requirements: Current life guarding and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer Certifications.
