STEM Maker And Woodworking InstructorNew York Edge is seeking an experienced artist and carpenter for the STEM Maker and Woodworking Instructor position.New York Edge is the largest provider of after school and community school programs in all five boroughs of New York City and Wyandanch, Long Island. With more than 25,000 students in grades K-12, New York Edge bridges the opportunity gap faced by students in underinvested communities by strengthening academic performance, health and wellness, self-confidence, and leadership skills for success in life.Work hours: Part Time (afterschool hours)Workdays: Monday-Friday (two days per week, two hours per day)What is a Maker & Woodworking Specialist:This program is a hands-on woodworking and design initiative where youth from grades 6-12 learn tangible life skills using traditional hand tools. Through project-based learning, the STEM Maker & Woodworking Instructor will bridge the gap between STEM concepts and physical creation, teaching creativity, craftsmanship, and structural problem-solving in a safe, supportive environment. We use real tools and real materials to build real confidence. This role is perfect for after-school educators, makers, or creatives who love working with youth and thrive in hands-on learning environments.What will you do:Teach or co-lead daily activitiesBuild strong relationships with and among studentsOrganize, lead, and promote interest in woodworking fieldsFollow safety plans and procedures.Build and maintain safe environments for students using tools and small machinery.Establish and maintain effective working relationships with program staff, school personnel and parents/guardiansEstablish goals for all lessons, units, and projects, and communicate those objectives to studentsAdapt teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students' needs and interests.Explain principles, techniques, and safety procedures to participants in the activities and demonstrate the use of materials and equipment.Other duties as assigned.RequirementsHigh School Diploma or equivalentMust be at least 18 years of ageCollege credits and/or degrees are highly preferredMust be knowledgeable and skilled in carpentry and small-machine usageAt least one year experience instructingExperience working with children strongly preferredThis role requires you to be in-person at work.
