Utilities Mechanic - Water & Wastewater Operations Division

The Broward County Board of County Commissioners is seeking qualified candidates for Utilities Mechanic - Water & Wastewater Operations Division. This job announcement will remain open until a sufficient number of applications are received and may close at any time.

Water and Wastewater Services is seeking a highly skilled and reliable Utility Mechanic (UM) for its Operations Division. The UM performs skilled work in the maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairing of water and wastewater systems, lift stations, and related mechanical equipment. The UM is responsible for performing the following tasks related to the construction and maintenance of water and wastewater mains, pumping and treatment facilities at water and wastewater plants and lift stations, including but not limited to:

• Installing water meters, hydrants, laying pipes, repairing leaks.
• Operating, removing, repairing, and installing various equipment, machinery and control systems.
• Ensuring efficient mechanical operation of equipment and machinery.
• Operating a large utility bed truck, flatbed truck and hauling trailers with equipment or materials as assigned.
• Operating concrete saws, compactors, pumps, and other related equipment, and using hand-tools to perform minor adjustments on equipment as needed.
• Completing daily paperwork and work-orders.
• Digging holes, ditches, and trenches for prolonged periods of time.
• Working in confined spaces as necessary.

General Description: Performs periodic maintenance and preventive maintenance to a variety of water related utilities operations in the County. Works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements: Requires one (1) year in mechanical maintenance/repair or closely related experience. Special Certifications and Licenses: Possess and maintain a valid Florida Class E Driver's License based on area of assignment.

Preferences:

• Vocational, Technical, or Associates Degree or higher in relevant field
• Collection and/or Distribution System Operator Certification
• Back Flow Prevention and/or Machinist and/or Vendor Pump and Motor Certification
• Welding Technology Certification.
• State of Florida Class "A or B" Commercial Driver's License
• At least one (1) year of experience working in a Water or Wastewater Treatment Plant >10 MGD
• At least one (1) year of experience working on a Collection System
• At least one (1) year of experience working on a Distribution System
• At least one (1) year of experience working on a Wastewater Transmission System with more than 20 Lift Stations
• At least one (1) year of experience using Maximo or another Computerized Maintenance Management System

Physical Demands: Performs medium to heavy work that involves walking, standing, stooping, lifting, digging, pushing and raising objects and also involves exerting between 20 to 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis and 50 to 100 pounds of force on an occasional basis.

Unavoidable Hazards (Work Environment): Involves routine and frequent exposure to toxic/caustic chemicals.
