Clinical Nurse

Job Summary

Provides competent clinical nursing care consistent with professional standards. The Clinical Nurse is responsible for coordinating and delivering patient care utilizing the nursing process in a hospital setting, reporting to the Nurse Manager/Director.

Essential Duties

Education:
- Participates in identifying and meeting personal learning needs.
- Attends education programs based on identified learning needs.
- Utilizes patient education materials relevant to the patient population with assistance.
- Assesses the readiness to learn of the patient, family, and caregivers.
- Evaluates the developmental level of the patient and factors impacting their ability to learn.
Evaluation of Care:
- Identifies expected patient outcomes.
- Seeks guidance as needed to revise the care plan.
- Participates in discussions with the interdisciplinary team to evaluate patient care.
- Communicates relevant information to promote continuity of care.
Implementation:
- Demonstrates competence in the care of patients with complex problems, addressing physical, psychosocial, educational, and safety aspects of care.
- Performs bedside point of care testing as required by the care plan.
- Utilizes organizational and nursing standards, policies, and procedures in the delivery of care.
- Organizes and prioritizes care according to patient and family needs.
- Consults with appropriate resources regarding patients with complex care issues and high-risk discharge planning.
Leadership:
- With assistance, develops goals to promote professional growth or minimize limitations.
- Achieves goals and objectives within the identified time frame or renegotiates with the supervisor as needed.
- Participates in development efforts and achievement of unit goals.
- Effectively utilizes communication systems.
- Promotes cost-effective care and provides feedback to co-workers.
- Monitors public policy and regulatory guidelines affecting the healthcare environment.
- Contributes to a safe, clean, and secure hospital environment.
Patient Assessment:
- Recognizes data from complex situations to determine care priorities.
- Includes appropriate physical, psychosocial, educational, and safety needs in assessments.
- Synthesizes assessment data prior to communicating to others.
- Assesses and anticipates discharge needs of patients and families.
- Develops relationships with families that promote their ability to advocate for both the patient and themselves.
Planning:
- Collaborates with patients and families to prepare or update the care plan.
- Utilizes multidisciplinary resources in planning care.
- Employs effective communication methods in planning discussions.
- Addresses cultural and ethnic issues in patient care planning.
- Demonstrates ability to prioritize tasks for patients with complex issues.
Research:
- Stays informed on relevant studies and articles through professional journals.
- Presents ideas and questions to staff for assessment of applicability.
