Job Overview The Head Start Assistant Teacher works collegially with the head teacher and is responsible for the academic, social‑emotional growth and development of preschool children in their care. The role includes engaging parents, ensuring compliance with Head Start Performance Standards, ODJFS Child Care licensing rules, and Step Up to Quality program standards. The position is full‑time (Monday‑Friday, 8:00 am‑5:00 pm). Administer screenings to assess children's developmental levels. Assist with recruitment and enrollment of children into Head Start. Attend professional meetings, conferences, and training to maintain competence. Maintain open and honest working relationships to promote excellent service. Control inventory of classroom equipment, materials, and supplies. Create weekly lesson plans addressing individual goals, curriculum requirements, and cultural influences. Promote social, emotional, physical, and cognitive development of children. Demonstrate cultural competency and respect for children’s backgrounds. Implement strategies for children with disabilities and maintain safety procedures. Enforce classroom rules and procedures for maintaining order. Maintain accurate family/child files, forms, and records. Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information. Collaborate with parents/guardians through conferences, home visits, and communications. Maintain Ohio Professional Development Registry profile. Ensure regular attendance and adherence to working hours. Make referrals to the Disabilities Manager as appropriate. Attend all required training and workshops. Lead activities promoting physical, mental, and social development. Practice active supervision of all children in care. Prepare home teaching lessons for families. Promote proper eating habits and personal hygiene. Manage meal implementation and maintain a developmentally appropriate classroom environment. Serve meals and snacks in accordance with nutritional guidelines. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Analyze situations, gather information, and recommend solutions. Education & Experience Requirements High school diploma and related credential required. Candidates without a credential but with at least 1 year of direct experience with preschool children who are willing to enroll and obtain a CDA credential within 18 months of hire will be considered; continued employment contingent on obtaining the credential. One year of experience with children and families; related experience considered. Physical Requirements Lift, climb, stoop, sit, bend, reach, speak, and see. Monitor child safety through sight and hearing. Stand and walk for extended periods. Handle, install, position, and move materials. Other Requirements Fingerprint submission for criminal background check. Physical examination at hire. Pre‑employment drug test.
