Bilingual Referral Authorization Coordinator Location: San Diego Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM-5:00 PM Employment Type: Full-Time Experience Level: Intermediate Position Overview We are seeking a Bilingual Referral Authorization Coordinator (English/Spanish) to support patient care by coordinating referrals, obtaining insurance authorizations, and scheduling specialty services. This role is ideal for someone with healthcare administrative experience, strong customer service skills, and a passion for helping patients navigate the healthcare system. The successful candidate will work closely with patients, providers, insurance carriers, and specialty offices to ensure timely authorization approvals, referral processing, and appointment coordination. Key Responsibilities Receive, review, and process referral and authorization requests accurately and promptly. Coordinate and schedule specialty appointments, diagnostic testing, Durable Medical Equipment (DME), and other provider-ordered services. Obtain prior authorizations from insurance carriers via phone, fax, email, and payer portals. Follow up on outstanding authorization requests and missing documentation to ensure timely completion. Review insurance eligibility, benefits, coverage guidelines, and authorization requirements. Track referrals and authorization status using EPIC and other healthcare systems. Communicate authorization updates and referral information to patients in a timely and professional manner. Maintain referral logs and referral closure processes by confirming appointment completion and attendance. Obtain specialist consultation notes, test results, and documentation following patient visits. Collaborate with providers, clinics, specialists, and insurance representatives to coordinate patient care. Assist with coverage at nearby clinic locations as needed. Meet established productivity, quality, and service standards. Required Qualifications Bilingual in English and Spanish with full professional fluency. Minimum of 1 year of healthcare experience including referral coordination, prior authorizations, medical office operations, or related healthcare administrative duties. Knowledge of health plans, insurance programs, eligibility requirements, and authorization processes. Minimum of 2 years of customer service experience. Experience working with EMR/EHR systems, preferably EPIC. High School Diploma or GED. Ability to type 35+ words per minute. Strong communication, organization, and multitasking skills. Preferred Qualifications Referral Intake experience. Prior Authorization experience. Medical Assistant Certificate. Coding and Data Processing Certificate. Call Center or high-volume patient scheduling experience. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of San Diego, CA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $25.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
