Controller (New York City Metropolitan Area)

Full-time

Alexander Chapman

The Opportunity

A fast-scaling, tier-one VC-backed tech platform is scaling its central finance infrastructure. Following rapid commercial growth and ahead of a planned major funding milestone, the business is carving out a high-impact Controller seat to build a modern, automated accounting engine from the ground up.

Reporting directly to the Head of Finance and partnering closely with Strategic Finance, this is a lean, high-autonomy seat. You will own everything from complex revenue recognition policies (gross vs. net, SaaS, usage-based models) to establishing audit readiness and driving internal close processes toward real-time accuracy.

Key Execution Focus

  • Technical Revenue Recognition: Own complex revenue accounting under ASC 606, evaluating gross vs. net treatment, usage-based pricing models, and multi-element commercial contracts.
  • Close Automation & Systems (Zero-Day Close): Audit existing month-end close workflows, implementing modern accounting tech stacks, AI automation tools, and automated ERP integrations to slash close timelines and deliver real-time financial accuracy.
  • Audit Readiness & Internal Controls: Build GAAP-compliant financial statement infrastructure from scratch, managing external auditor relationships to ensure clean, first-time audit readiness.
  • Team Scaling & Architecture: Operate with high autonomy initially, while defining operational workflows and scoping the hiring plan for a Senior Accountant beneath you as the platform scales.

The Archetype

  • The Foundation: Active CPA (mandatory) with ~4 years of rigorous audit foundation at a Big Four accounting firm (PwC, Deloitte, EY, KPMG), ideally with IPO audit readiness exposure.
  • The Startup Operator: 2–4 years of in-house accounting execution within a high-growth Series B, C, or D SaaS or software startup environment. Total post-grad experience of ~6–9 years.
  • Systems & Automation Mindset: Strong comfort across modern financial tools, subledgers, and ERP systems (e.g., Rillet, NetSuite, HubiFi). Experience using data tools or workflow automation to streamline reporting is a major plus.

Why This Seat Matters

  • High-Growth Leverage: Own the core accounting engine for a company scaling beyond the Unicorn status.
  • Unblocked Ownership: Total autonomy to select tooling, design accounting architecture, and set up scalable controls without corporate red tape.
