Safety Manager

Application Instructions

Leads all safety improvement process activities for the facility in support of Merrill's Mission, Vision, and Values. To assist the Springfield plant with its safety and compliance needs by managing the safety culture, functions, activities and reducing workplace injuries and accidents. Responsible for the overall coordination and implementation of the environmental, health and safety program within the plant to assure compliance with regulatory agency guidelines. Handle governmental reporting activities and ensure compliance with all State and Federal Laws.

Safety Manager is an effective leader with exceptional communication skills who preferably has had experience with environmental compliance and leading production safety programs.

Position Description

• Prepare, maintain and implement written safety policies and procedures
• Provide health & safety training to all employees, including new hire orientation (and retrain when infractions occur) while promoting employee awareness
• Ensure that all health and safety trainings are up to date
• Manage safety audits and inspections to ensure compliance with company policies and federal/state occupational safety regulations and laws
• Organize, track and oversee all required safety training, i.e. fork truck, fall protection, crane, etc.
• Lead investigation team for all incidents, significant near misses and property losses; create associate reports work with HR and Plant Manager on corrective and preventative actions
• Enter all incidents into the workers compensation system and provide documentation to HR and Plant Manager during the shift that the incident occurs
• Update the safety tracker and send daily reports to all Merrill staff
• Coordinates with plant manager, supervisors and other department leads to identify and eliminate unsafe conditions & practices throughout the plant
• Provide weekly EHS reports to management; identify trends by analyzing injury/illness data and recommend corrective actions
• Create/review Risk Assessments, SOPs and work instructions related to safety
• Research and recommend changes to work conditions and procedures to improve the safety of work environments
• Lead, participate in and support OBS Committee meetings and programs
• Maintenance and submission of OSHA logs
• Assist in purchasing, identifying and distributing appropriate personal protective equipment(PPE)
• Assist with the management of workman's compensation claims, managing work restrictions, assisting in decision making, when necessary
• Responsible for scheduling annual hearing tests and random drug screens
• Develop, implement, and update Emergency Evacuation Plans, Emergency Response Plans and Job Hazard Analysis/Job Safety Analysis
• Expectation of a minimum of 40% of time on the floor
• Find safety issues and lead efforts in organizing and leading to resolve the issues
• Create content and conduct safety meetings and safety toolbox talks
• Provide weekly hazmat and universal waste reporting
• Make sure all recycling logs are up to date
• Conduct storm water walks and make sure documentation is up to date
• Involvement in weekly safety meetings with all Merrill Steel locations
• Conduct daily crane and forklift spot checks
• Performs inspections required to maintain environmental storm water, air and RCRA

Position Requirements

Skills, Abilities and Experience

• Bachelor's degree or higher in related field or combination of education and experience preferred;
• Minimum of 5 years' experience in manufacturing;
• Minimum of 3 years' experience in similar role;
• Expertise in OSHA, DOT and EPA regulations;
• Ability to effectively communicate to large and small groups is required;
• Knowledge of fabrication of structural steel practices preferred;
• Ability to listen and to teach others is required
• High integrity and ability to maintain strict confidentiality
