Inside Machinist/CNC Programmer (Part Time)

Overview Part‑time, on‑call Inside Machinist/CNC Programmer position in Portsmouth, VA. Primary responsibilities include advanced high‑speed CNC machining programming, setup, and first‑article production for multi‑axis CNC mills and lathes. The role requires expertise in SolidWorks, Mastercam, and G‑coding to model, post‑process, and program manufacturing projects. Duties and Responsibilities Generation of CAM system wire and solid modeling files from blueprints/drawings. CNC tool pathing with non‑interference proofing. CAM post‑editor file creation, organization, and management. Perform G‑code edits or add lines of code for tool path correction. Upload and provide operator‑ready G‑code program solutions for safe CNC turning and machining center production operations. Design and generate program code and manufacturing processes for project‑specific fixturing and tooling. Establish required purchased material and tooling for CAM‑supported projects. Read mechanical drawings and navigate technical work documents to produce submarine/shipboard components on CNC machines. Choose and install the correct cutting tools based on the machining operation tool list and material. Calculate speeds and feeds using mathematical equations for cutting, turning, drilling, milling, boring, tapping, threading, and reaming. Machine non‑ferrous materials such as stainless steel, K‑Monel, Inconel 625, Inconel 718, copper, brass, nylon, Teflon, 6061‑T6 aluminum, 4140, 4130, and various plastics. Interpret mechanical drawings, sketches, and work orders to meet requirements. Apply geometric tolerance control frames, interpret geometric symbols, and implement associated tolerances. Perform in‑process and final inspections utilizing precision measuring instruments (calipers up to 60 inches, outside micrometers up to 40 inches, inside micrometers, bore gauges, thread gauges, thread pitch micrometers, system 21 & 22 thread check gauges, height gauges, groove micrometers, dial indicators, test indicators, coaxial indicators, surface comparators, and other tools). Secure machine implements such as vises, rotaries, indexing heads, sin plates, sub plates, custom fixtures, and workpiece clamps. Set up and operate saws, cut‑off saws, abrasive cut‑off saws, sheet‑metal brake, hydraulic press, hand press, radial‑arm drill, and belt sander. Understand tool offsets, work offsets, tool setters, and work offset probes on CNC machining centers and lathes. Required Qualifications 3 years of experience in CNC operation. High school diploma or equivalent. CAD/CAM or programming experience. Manual lathe and manual mill experience. Proficiency with high‑speed steel cutting tools, carbide grades, and carbide profiles for optimal material removal rates. Moderate understanding of metallurgy properties and material removal for roughing and finishing. Strong interpersonal skills and effective communication with coworkers. Pass PQS 301 Craftsmen qualifications. Ability to read mechanical drawings, technical work documents, manuals, and maintenance standards. Follow detailed written instructions and take instruction from machine shop supervision. Maintain a secret security clearance (U.S. citizen required). Preferred Qualifications Degree in Integrated Machining Technology. Experience with CMM operation. Programming experience at the control. Experience in reverse engineering components.
