Job Description

The Roving Building Engineer role will be supporting multiple commercial facilities in the North DC and Rockville area. You will operate, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair a wide range of building systems with a strong focus on HVAC, while also providing general maintenance services. This position is field-based, requires regular travel between sites, and offers the chance to work with a variety of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and life safety systems.

Responsibilities

• Operate, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair facility equipment and building systems across multiple commercial facilities, with technical expertise in at least one craft area such as Electrical, HVAC, Piping/Plumbing, or Central Utility Plant Operations.
• Perform maintenance, monitoring, and repairs to mechanical, plumbing, structural, furniture, fire life safety, and control systems to ensure all facility and building systems meet applicable standards.
• Travel between multiple facilities within the North DC and Rockville coverage area to inspect systems, perform maintenance, and respond to service needs.
• Maintain responsibility for facility services including preventive maintenance, purchasing and inventory control, contracted maintenance, general maintenance, and technical proficiency.
• Clean, inspect, calibrate, and replace parts on HVAC systems and associated equipment to maintain optimal performance levels.
• Record equipment readings, analyze performance, and make necessary adjustments to ensure proper and efficient operation of mechanical and HVAC systems.
• Comply with departmental policies for the safe storage, use, and disposal of hazardous materials, and maintain a clean, safe, and organized workplace.
• Perform periodic checks and audits of tool and instrument inventory to ensure all equipment is available, properly maintained, and in good working condition.
• Monitor the quality, timeliness, and pricing of maintenance work performed by outside contractors to ensure standards and budget requirements are met.
• Follow all safety procedures, maintain good housekeeping practices, and promote safety in all work areas.
• Recognize potential dangers and safety hazards in the workplace and propose practical methods to eliminate or mitigate these risks.
• Use computer applications, including Word and Excel, to document maintenance activities, record readings, track inventory, and complete required reports.

Essential Skills

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• 2–4 years of experience maintaining and repairing commercial building systems.
• Minimum of 5 years of HVAC background with strong knowledge of general maintenance.
• Experience analyzing the operation of commercial or industrial mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems to identify causes of problems or malfunctions and take corrective action.
• EPA 608 Type II Certification.
• Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
• Ability to travel between multiple facilities in the North DC and Rockville area.
• Working knowledge of computer applications, including Microsoft Word and Excel.
• Ability to comply with safety procedures and hazardous materials handling policies.
• Strong troubleshooting skills and the ability to work independently in the field.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• EPA 608 Universal Certification (preferred).
• Two years of trades schooling in electrical system design, refrigeration, and HVAC (preferred).
• Experience working with fire life safety and control systems in commercial facilities.
• Comfort working across multiple craft areas such as electrical, HVAC, piping/plumbing, and central utility plant operations.

Work Environment

This is a field-based role with coverage across multiple commercial facilities in the North DC and Rockville area. The standard schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. You will travel between sites using company-provided vans and equipment, working in mechanical rooms, plant areas, and general building spaces. The environment involves hands-on work with HVAC systems, mechanical and electrical equipment, plumbing infrastructure, and fire life safety systems. You will regularly use tools, instruments, and computer applications such as Word and Excel to perform and document your work. The workplace emphasizes safety, proper handling of hazardous materials, and maintaining clean, organized work areas. Interviews may be conducted by phone or virtually, with a possible in-person round depending on location, followed by a structured onboarding process into the client’s systems.

This is a Contract position based out of Rockville, MD.

The pay range for this position is $35.00 - $35.00/hr.
