General Maintenance Worker 2 is a skilled and experienced professional responsible for the advanced maintenance, repair, and efficient operation of the hospital's buildings, equipment, grounds, and critical utility systems. This role is essential in providing a safe, functional, and compliant environment that supports exceptional patient care, staff well-being, and visitors' comfort. General Maintenance Worker 2 performs duties independently and may guide less experienced team members, ensuring all work adheres to established standards and regulations.


Responsibilities

Essential Job Functions:

• Perform complex troubleshooting, diagnosis, and repair of hospital buildings, equipment, grounds, and critical utility systems. Operate and monitor various facility systems and machinery.
• Conduct routine and preventative maintenance (PM) tasks on a wide range of equipment and systems to ensure optimal operation, maximize lifespan, and comply with manufacturer specifications.
• Respond promptly to emergency repair requests, including system failures, equipment malfunctions, and urgent facility issues, to minimize disruption to hospital operations and patient care. Participate in an on-call rotation as required.
• Ensure all maintenance activities strictly comply with local, state, and federal regulations (e.g., OSHA, NFPA) and healthcare-specific standards (e.g., DNV). Adhere to and enforce all safety protocols, including Lockout/Tagout procedures.
• Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, work orders, service reports, and equipment performance using a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS).
• Collaborate closely with other hospital departments to schedule and coordinate maintenance activities, minimizing disruption to patient care areas. Communicate effectively and professionally with hospital staff, vendors, and contractors regarding project status, repair needs, and system issues.
• Manage and monitor inventory control of materials, tools, and supplies required for maintenance activities, communicating needs for new equipment or parts to the Facilities Manager.
• May provide technical guidance and support to General Maintenance Worker 1 staff, assisting with complex tasks and training.
• The employee supports the hospital mission, vision, values, policies, and procedures.
• Participates in required education for DNV programs as applicable to position (reference program education curriculum).
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

Education

Required: High School Diploma or equivalent.

Preferred: Vocational or trade school certification/degree in HVAC, electrical, plumbing, or a related mechanical field

Licenses/ certifications/ registrations

Required: Valid State issued a Driver's License.

Preferred: Relevant licenses or certifications (e.g., EPA Universal Refrigerant Certification, Boiler Operator, Electrical Journeyman, Plumbing Journeyman) are highly preferred and may be required based on specific facility needs or state regulations.

Experience

Required: Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in facilities maintenance, with a strong emphasis on healthcare or critical environment settings. Proven experience with complex troubleshooting and repair of building systems.

The position also involves occasional stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling when assisting patients or accessing equipment. Walking and standing are typically continuous throughout the shift. The role requires the ability to lift to 50 pounds independently and involves frequent pushing, pulling, carrying, or repositioning of objects or patients weighing up to 25 pounds. There may also be occasional lifting or transferring of individuals weighing over 100 pounds, with the expectation that appropriate lifting techniques, mechanical aids, or team assistance will be used to ensure safety. Working Conditions:

This position is performed primarily in an indoor healthcare environment, such as a hospital, clinic, or long-term care facility. While the work setting is protected from outdoor weather conditions, it may be subject to variable indoor temperatures. The role involves frequent exposure to infectious and contagious diseases, hazardous materials, and medical equipment, with the expectation that all staff follow appropriate safety protocols and utilize personal protective equipment (PPE) as required.

The health care environment can be fast-paced and unpredictable, requiring the ability to respond quickly to changing circumstances, including high-pressure or emergency situations. The work setting also involves multiple simultaneous demands and varying levels of noise due to medical equipment, staff activity, and patient needs.
