Medical Specialist

The Louisiana State Penitentiary is currently seeking qualified applicants for the position of Medical Specialist within the institution's medical department. This position provides administrative and technical support to healthcare staff while assisting in the efficient delivery of medical services in a correctional environment. The Medical Specialist will be responsible for maintaining medical records, scheduling appointments, processing medical documentation, coordinating communication between healthcare providers and institutional staff, and ensuring records are accurate and maintained in accordance with departmental policies and confidentiality requirements. This position requires excellent organizational, communication, and computer skills, as well as the ability to work effectively in a structured and secure environment while supporting quality healthcare services for the institution.

Minimum Qualifications: Two years of experience or training in patient care or medical records.

Job Duties:

  • Retrieves and delivers medical records for sick call, appointments, emergencies, or to health care providers upon request
  • Arrange as ordered for Nursing Unit admissions and diagnostic testing. Preps patients for examination, which includes obtaining and recording vital signs.
  • Assist with processing patients at receiving desk as needed, flagging charts, printing MARS for next day clinics, transporting nurses to and from out camp clinics, transporting blood work from out camps to the treatment center.
  • Prepares room and equipment for examinations. Cleans room/equipment and properly stores equipment after examinations. Maintains and monitors equipment to determine if properly functioning.

Position-Specific Details:

Appointment Type: PROBATION, or PROMOTION OF A PERMANENT, CLASSIFIED LOUISIANA STATE EMPLOYEE

  • Current permanent status classified LA State employees may be required to accept a probational appointment if accepted.
  • An employee selected for a promotion may be required to serve a trial detail prior to being permanently promoted.
  • This posting may also be used to fill a vacancy as a temporary job appointment. If filled as a temporary job appointment, should a permanent position become available, the employee may be converted to a probational appointment.

Other Important Information:

  • Any degree, certificate, special license, or DD-214 must be verified by official documentation prior to hire.
  • Any qualifying experience that is based on college credit/college hours should have an accompanying transcript for verification.
  • This is a 24-hour facility.
