Auto Shop Mechanic 1st Class (St. Croix)

Job Summary

Under general supervision, the Auto Mechanic 1st Class is responsible for highly skilled work involving the repair and overhaul of engines and transmissions of various automotive machines and performs the more technical and difficult auto repair work. Because the Authority has a primary responsibility to serve the public 24 hours per day an employee in this class is expected to work overtime as conditions demand and may be required to accept overtime on short notice during emergency or unusual conditions and to perform essential work as assigned. Essential Duties & Responsibilities

• Rebuilds parts such as crankshafts and cylinder blocks
• Removes units such as engines, transmission or differentials from the vehicle and replaces or repairs parts
• Reviews ignition systems, lights and instrument panels
• Realigns and adjusts brakes, repairs or replaces shock absorbers and solders leaks in radiators
• Replaces and adjusts headlights and installs/repairs accessories
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Good knowledge of modern methods, tools and equipment of the auto body repair trade
• Good knowledge of the operating principles and mechanics of internal combustion engines
• Good knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade
• Skilled in the use and care of the hand and machine tools employed in automotive repair work
• Skilled in locating and repairing defects in automotive equipment
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions accurately and quickly

Education & Experience

High school diploma, or equivalent, including or supplemented by courses in automotive mechanics, and six (6) years of experience in repairing automobiles and trucks, three (3) years of which must have been as an Auto Mechanic 2nd Class.
