Exemption Status: Non‑Exempt Hiring Range: $15.00 – $23.32 (final offer may vary based on experience, skills, qualifications, and internal equity considerations) Schedule Details: Holidays – Every Other Holiday; Weekends – Every Other Weekend Scheduled Hours: 11:00 PM – 7:30 AM Shift: 3 – Night Shift, 8 Hours (United States of America) Hours: 24 per week Cost Center: 24070 – 0610 Psych IP Geriatric This position may have a signing bonus; a member of the Recruitment Team will confirm eligibility during the interview process. Under the direction of the appropriate licensed clinician, the Patient Care Technician I performs a variety of patient care activities and receives workplace education and training to assist members of the health care team in the care of patients. Major Responsibilities Provides clear, timely communication to the RN regarding observations and changes seen in patients, including changes in skin condition, vital signs, and mental status. Provides constant observation of high‑risk patients as assigned by the Resource Nurse or designee. Participates in the development and maintenance of a safe environment, utilizes interventions to de‑escalate patients, and, if necessary, participates in restraints in accordance with training and education. Assists patients with daily living activities such as personal hygiene, ambulation, meals, and nourishment. Assists in moving, lifting, positioning, and transporting patients with proper safety techniques and body mechanics. Maintains patient safety by performing safety checks, utilizing fall‑prevention devices and strategies, and following the Restraint Policy when caring for a restrained patient. Takes and records vital signs (temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, pulse ox), and measures and records patients’ weight and height. Performs ECGs, Point‑of‑Care tests, and bladder scans, collects, labels, and prepares specimens for transport to the lab. Performs other unit‑specific procedures such as battery changes for telemetry units, checking equipment status, cleaning equipment between patients, and proper storage of supplies. Assists the RN or Licensed Independent Practitioner with treatments and procedures by preparing patients, obtaining equipment and supplies, positioning patients, providing emotional support, and cleaning up after procedures. Observes, measures, and records oral food and fluid intake; refills tube‑feeding bags; empties and records output from foley catheters, ostomy appliances, and drainage systems; performs ostomy care as directed. Demonstrates sensitivity and responsiveness to patients’ needs by acting as a source of information and building positive rapport and relationships. Provides respectful, culturally and age‑appropriate communication with patients, staff, family, visitors, and others. Replenishes patient and unit supplies and equipment as needed. Requests assistance from identified resources when more direction is needed. Maintains current knowledge of hospital and unit changes by reading communication boards, bulletin boards, posted notices, and replying to UMMHC e‑mails regularly. Standard Staffing Level Responsibilities Complies with established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives. Attends a variety of meetings, conferences, and seminars as required or directed. Demonstrates use of Quality Improvement in daily operations. Complies with all health and safety regulations and requirements. Maintains regular, reliable, and predictable attendance. Performs other similar and related duties as required or directed. Position Qualifications License/Certification/Education: Minimum of a high school education or GED. Basic Life Support certification within 30 days as a condition of employment. Experience/Skills: Ability to read, write, and communicate in English clearly and concisely. Basic computer skills. Basic medical terminology knowledge. Must remain calm when under stress or in emergency situations. Physical Demands and Environmental Conditions The position requires work indoors in a patient‑care environment, hand dexterity, hearing, and vision to take directions from patients or providers, adjust equipment, and observe patient status. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds. The work is of heavy demand, requiring standing, walking most of the time with the possibility of pushing heavy equipment and bending frequently.
