SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the Area Manager of Information Technology, an Information Technology Specialist is responsible for a variety of complex operations as well as coordination duties; including troubleshooting, onsite and remote support; computer systems, servers, software, configuration and maintenance of all IT-related equipment and processes. Performs related and other work as required.

REQUIREMENTS

Training and Experience

1. High school diploma or equivalent.
2. Successful completion of an Associate’s degree in computer science or information technology from an accredited university or college OR 3 years of paid directly related experience may substitute for the certification/college coursework requirement.

Preferred Training and Experience

1. Experience with troubleshooting printers, copiers, coin\bill vending devices for copiers;

1. Experience installing, troubleshooting, diagnosing, and repairing desktop and laptop computer hardware;
2. Working knowledge of networking and basic troubleshooting of networking devices (such as switches and wireless access points);
3. Experience configuring and managing users within Active Directory.
4. Experience installing, configuring, and maintaining desktop applications such as MS Office products and antivirus software

Highly Desired Training and Experience

1. Experience creating, deploying, and managing desktop computer images;
2. Experience with the operations of network security appliances and devices;
3. Experience working with VOIP telephony.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Comprehensive knowledge of:

1. computer hardware, including desktops, laptops, monitors, printers, mobile devices.

Good knowledge of:

1. basic networking fundamentals, including WAN, DNS, IP addresses, DHCP, wireless, etc.;
2. computer operating systems, including current Microsoft Windows versions;
3. application software, including Microsoft Office, antivirus applications, etc.

Skills to:

1. understand and follow complex written and oral instructions;

1. establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, vendors, and the public;
2. use resourcefulness, tact, courtesy, and respect in dealing professionally with library patrons, employees and vendors;
3. deal with multiple and extra unexpected tasks simultaneously;

8. learn functions, operate and perform basic maintenance on devices and specialized applications.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms, stand, walk, sit, twist, use hands to finger, grasp, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls, talk and hear. Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate computers and office equipment. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

 

The employee is occasionally required to climb, balance, stoop, crouch, squat, kneel, and crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or carry up to 50 pounds, frequently lift and/or carry up to 20 pounds. Employee must frequently push and/or pull loaded carts weighing up to 150 pounds.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1. Responsible for assisting in the day-to-day activities of the Information Technology department’s operations. These include verifying the operability of the computers, servers, phones and networking for all of the Library’s 22 locations. A typical day can range from replacing new equipment, resetting passwords, Help Desk activities, offering remote and onsite assistance, troubleshooting applications, updates, performing upgrades, and dealing with service outages. An ideal candidate should demonstrate the ability to be versatile in managing different types and severities of issues.
2. Participate in cross-training with other IT staff members.
3. Installs, troubleshoots, and maintains hardware and software of public and staff computers.
4. Assists with training of other staff members.
5. Assists in maintaining records and statistics as required.
6. Installs, troubleshoots and configures information technology-related equipment, software and services.
7. Coordinates with service providers for assistance with equipment, services and support.
8. Manages security patches for computer applications and operating systems.
9. Participates in entry tasks to the asset inventory database.
10. Deploys and retires IT equipment.
11. Meets monthly with supervisor to review work plan.
12. Attends meetings of appointed committees, workshops and conferences.
13. Performs other duties as required.

 

PRESENT SCHEDULE [subject to change without notice]:

Monday – Friday 8:00am – 4:30pm (with a ½ hour unpaid lunch break)

SALARY

$23.77/hour + benefits Note: required 12% deductions for all full-time employees for retirement through the City of Shreveport

A criminal background check and a drug screening are part of the pre-hire process. The State of Louisiana Bureau of Criminal Identification and Information and these checks will be conducted on a yearly basis for positions which provide outreach to daycare centers. A mandatory full day orientation is part of the new hire process; these orientations are scheduled on Tuesdays from 8:30am to 5:00pm.
