Overview

If you want a safety job where you're actually on the floor instead of behind a desk, this is it. You'll own the safety program across our fabrication, assembly, and panel shops in Grantsville, MD — where welders, fitters, machinists, assemblers, panel builders, and painters build the products our customers depend on. Every day you're out among them: coaching, training, catching the hazard before it becomes an incident, and building the kind of safety culture where any employee feels empowered to stop work and say something.

You'll lead weekly safety meetings and hands-on training, run monthly facility audits, and partner directly with production supervision to solve real problems — machine guarding, lockout/tagout, hot work, rigging and lifts, electrical safe work practices, welding fume and coatings exposure — in ways that keep people safe and keep the shop moving. There's real documentation behind all of it: audits tracked to closure, OSHA recordkeeping, training and fit test records, permits, incident investigations. But none of it gets written from a desk. The records only mean something because you were out there to see what they're describing. You'll also be the face of our safety program to customers, customer representatives, and third-party auditors who walk through our doors, which means the work you do here is visible well beyond the facility.

We're looking for someone who knows OSHA General Industry regulations cold as they apply to fabrication, welding, assembly, panel building, and coatings, and who brings a working understanding of environmental compliance, industrial hygiene, and housekeeping best practices. Just as important: you have to like people, because influence — not authority — is how this job gets done.

Responsibilities

• Mentor and train shop personnel, and encourage safe work through positive relationships, to ensure best safety practices throughout the fabrication facility and the Company
• Lead weekly safety meetings for facility personnel
• Conduct powered industrial truck (forklift) operator training and evaluations, and maintain current operator certification and evaluation records
• Ensure and enforce that employees follow company, customer, and regulatory agency safety policies and procedures through daily shop floor presence, communication, and education, and document and report Company and employee safety practices and deficiencies
• Identify and correct deficiencies in safety practices on the shop floor, and work with the production team to develop practical solutions to hazards and safety concerns
• Perform and document monthly facility safety audits covering work cells, welding and cutting areas, blast and paint areas, material storage and racking, mezzanines, and the yard, and track findings to closure
• Teach or instruct hands-on safety classes in the shop or classroom

• Work primarily indoors in a fabrication shop environment, with regular time outdoors in the yard and occasional work at customer and job sites in all types of weather

Qualifications

• 5+ years’ experience in an active safety or compliance role, fabrication, manufacturing, or heavy industrial experience preferred
• Bachelor’s degree in Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, or Management or equivalent education, training, and/or experience preferred
• Certificate in GSP (Graduate Safety Practitioner), CSP (Certified Safety Professional), ASP (Associate Safety Professional), or OHST (Occupational Health and Safety Technologist) preferred
• Completion of instructor certifications such as OSHA 501, OSHA 511, powered industrial truck and overhead crane/rigging train-the-trainer, First Aid/CPR/AED instructor, MSHA Part 46/48 Trainer Card, etc. preferred
• Valid driver’s license required
