Police Officer Cadet - Zuni Police Department (Open Until Filled)

GENERAL DEFINITION : Under close supervision performs work in accordance with departmental rules, regulations and receives assignments and instructions from police personnel of higher rank. Performs a variety of entry level law enforcement duties in a training capacity related to the laws, maintaining the peace, and protecting the citizens of Zuni; while concurrently working towards the successfully completion of a Basic Police Officer Training Program to become a certified law enforcement officer. SUPERVISION RECEIVED : As a non-certified law enforcement officer, duties are performed under the supervision of the Lieutenant, Sergeant or police personnel of higher rank. SUPERVISION EXERCISED : None

DUTIES :

Responsible for attending all required training sessions. Required to learn all training information and material that is provided. Follows all orders from Certified Police Officers and/or the Sergeant, as well as any member within the chain of command. Rides along with certified Police Officers to gain knowledge of patrol duties, investigation of suspicious situations, and how to take action appropriate to a wide variety of situations. Learns how to process a variety of civil papers, such as summons, subpoena, eviction notices, exclusion orders, restitution orders, and such. Attends basic firearms course and bi-annual firearms qualification training and other periodic training or conferences on new or changed laws, rules and procedures. Required to complete a pre-Academy training course through the Zuni Police Department. Required to obtain certification in First Aid, CPR, and Defensive Driving. Required to attend and successfully complete the Basic Police Academy Training Program. Responsible for becoming knowledgeable in the enforcement of tribal, State, and Federal traffic and criminal codes, laws, ordinances and statutes. Assist certified Police Officers in traffic and crowd control for ceremonies, funerals, parades, and other large gatherings. Assist in transporting prisoners (adult and juvenile) and mental patients in the Pueblo of Zuni to destinations on and off the Zuni Reservation. May testify in court. Maintains a clean and orderly uniform and all Police Department issued equipment. Performs other duties that may be assigned. Performs in-office functions to provide administrative support such as clerical duties, recordkeeping, answering telephones, data processing and filing. Transports vehicles for maintenance and repairs. Participate in community meetings and school presentations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES : Ability to learn how to use specialized equipment, such as firearms, communications equipment and computers. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with staff members and the general public. Ability to meet deadlines with severe time constraints. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS : U.S. Citizen, 21 years of age. Must not have any felony convictions or any type of conviction for moral turpitude. Must not have been the subject of a court order prohibiting the possession of a firearm. EDUCATION, TRAINING & EXPERIENCE : High school graduate or GED. Some knowledge of law enforcement methods and procedures, including some of the techniques used in police work, such as traffic control, investigations, crowd control, riot control, and armed and unarmed defense procedures is preferred but not required. Some awareness of applicable Federal, State and Tribal laws, jurisdictional boundaries, rules and relationships in McKinley County is preferred but not required. LICENSE AND CERTIFICATES : Must have a valid New Mexico Driver’s License with no DWI/DUI convictions within the past three (3) years. Driving is an essential part of the duties. Must be insurable for liability insurance purposes. Must be certified as a Police Officer by the Bureau of Indian Affairs Indian Police Academy and State of New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy within one (1) year of employment. Must be able to obtain certification in CPR, Firearms, First Aid, and Intoxilyzer 8000. WORKING CONDITION : Work is performed inside and outside, sometimes in inclement weather conditions. May be subject to injuries and physical attacks. May require physical exertion under vigorous and unusual conditions. Must be willing to relocate within reasonable amount of time from the date of employment or after completion of probation. Irregular work hours including nights, weekends, and holidays. On-call duty may be required. PHYSICAL DEMANDS : Must not have any physical impairment that would hinder performance as a Police Officer Cadet. Must be physically fit to pass a physical fitness test. Full use of the body and extremities to bend, stretch, sit, walk, jump, crawl, squat, etc. Good reflexes of the arms and hands in order to draw and shoot side arms quickly and accurately. Considerable physical strength and agility to pursue suspects on foot, make arrests and restrain suspects when resistance is encountered. Good mental and physical health. Good vision and hearing, with any deficiencies correctable by use of glasses and/or hearing aid devices. Physical strength to conduct searches involving traversing difficult terrain on foot and the removal of heavy objects presenting safety hazards such as fallen trees and rocks or dead animals. Will be required to participate in a monthly fitness battery. SPECIAL CONDITIONS : Must pass an Adult Educational Screening exam and Physical Fitness Minimum Standards. Must pass a conditional post-offer-of employment physical examination. Must pass a conditional post-offer-of employment psychological evaluation. Subject to annual post-offer-of employment physical examination. Position is subject to Pre-Employment drug testing. Position is Safety Sensitive and will be subject to random drug screening for duration of employment, in compliance with Pueblo of Zuni Drug Free Workplace Policy. Must not have been convicted of a misdemeanor offense (excluding minor traffic offenses) within the one (1) year period immediately preceding the issuance of certification.
