Crime Scene Investigator
The purpose of this position is to provide support to the police department for the City of Spartanburg and is responsible for crime scene processing, documenting, collecting, and preserving evidence. This class works under general supervision in accordance with legal standards and departmental protocols.
Examples of Duties
- Conducts comprehensive crime scene investigations, ensuring the accurate identification, collection, analysis, and preservation of physical and biological evidence.
- Conducts advanced forensic processing of evidence in field and laboratory settings, utilizing chemical, photographic, and light-based techniques to reveal, document, and safeguard critical evidence.
- Maintain accurate records, chain of custody documentation, prepare detailed reports of scenes that have been processed and any involvement during the investigation.
- Testify in court regarding the crime scene procedures and evidence handling.
- Foster and maintain effective collaboration with other bureaus and partner agencies.
- Collaborates with the forensic pathologist and coroner's investigator during autopsies to ensure the accurate collection, photographic documentation, and preservation of physical evidence in full compliance with forensic protocols and chain-of-custody regulations.
- Testifies at trials, hearings, grand juries, and depositions.
- Conducts research, collects, and analyzes data to prepare reports and documents.
- Performs related work as assigned.
Typical Qualifications
- High school diploma, GED, or equivalent certificate of competency. Associate degree in Criminal Justice or college level course work in crime scene investigation, photography, fingerprint identification, and/or criminalistics preferred.
- Two (2) years' experience in crime scene investigation is preferred or any combination of education, training and experience that would likely provide the knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Valid driver's license.
- Strong computer proficiency, particularly with Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word), is essential.
- Candidates must be capable of analyzing complex data, operating standard office equipment, and performing detailed, accurate work.
Supplemental Information
Salary depends upon experience. Starting salary is $42,536 annually.
