Speech-Language Pathologist Richmond County Schools Exceptional Children Department - Hamlet, North Carolina Job Details Job ID: 4143334 Application Deadline: Posted until filled Re-Posted: Apr 16, 2026 4:00 AM (UTC) Starting Date: Immediately Job Description POSITION: Speech Language Pathologist REPORTS TO: Director of Exceptional Children TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 10-Month NATURE OF WORK: Utilizing leadership, advocacy, and collaboration, school-based speech-language pathologists provide prevention, assessment, and remediation services for students who exhibit difficulties in the areas of language, speech, voice, and fluency. These services are designed to help children meet their educational goals. Below are the major functions of the speech-language pathologist employed in educational environments. Each function is followed by related evidences. Major Function: Planning and Oversight Organizes a program that addresses local school speech-language goals. Contributes to the development of program guidelines as appropriate. Cooperates with local education agency, community and/or state programs to affect comprehensive services. Works cooperatively with school personnel to accomplish the goals and objectives of the local education agency. Attends meetings such as faculty meetings, special education meetings and parent teacher conferences. Serves on committees such as curriculum development committee, school-based committees, and/or speech-language program development meetings. Schedules interventions using a variety of service delivery models, including classroom intervention, consultation/collaboration and pull-out as appropriate to meet student needs in the least restrictive environment. Applies a systematic workload model to facilitate the organization of the speech language program within the school. Major Function: Screening, Testing, Diagnosing and Advising Conducts speech, language and hearing screenings. Serves on student intervention team/IEP team as appropriate. Works with other professionals to carry out the screening process. Uses appropriate screening instruments. Administers formal and informal assessments. Selects appropriate assessments based on individual student needs. Obtains additional diagnostic information from appropriate persons and available records for speech-language purposes. Integrates data from a variety of assessment techniques and sources. Determines effects of the student's impairment regarding access to the general curriculum. Prepares evaluation summary. Provides information on speech, language and hearing programs to school personnel, parents and non-school agencies. Sponsors professionals during Clinical Fellowship Year; supervises interns and paraprofessionals. Major Function: Managing and Conducting Therapy Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of North Carolina Standard Course of Study in management of communicative disorders. Collaborates with classroom teachers in the management of speech language disorders. Plans evidence-based interventions appropriate for individual students and groups of students. Implements the most appropriate service delivery model based on the students' degree of severity. Provides activities commensurate with students' interests and aptitudes. Modifies therapeutic instructional approaches and other functions based on data gathered during therapy. Selects and implements evidence-based practices supporting the goals and objectives of the speech, language and hearing program. Designs, selects or modifies special curricula/therapy content. Uses a variety of equipment, materials, devices and aids. Uses systematic and evidence-based intervention strategies to foster communicative competence. Provides feedback and reinforcement to students. Manages facilities, materials and equipment, including assistive technology. Requests and maintains adequate facilities, materials and equipment. Arranges therapy environment to create optimum learning conditions. Chooses therapy materials to meet students’ needs, age, cultural differences and interests. Adjusts intervention strategies based on student performance. Demonstrates respect for cultural differences and promotes effective interpersonal relations with students. Major Function: Adhering to Local, State, Federal Regulations and Ethical Practices Completes procedural documentation appropriately. Demonstrates knowledge and use of statewide testing procedures. Abides by professional code of ethics. Develops appropriate IEPs based on students' strengths and needs. Provides and follows schedules for assigned schools and informs appropriate personnel of any departures from schedule. Manages time efficiently. Engages in continuing education and professional growth activities related to speech-language-hearing and education. Participates in professional meetings, symposia and workshops directly related to the profession. Major Function: Liaison Provides consultation to parents, teachers and other appropriate school personnel. Consults with parents and teachers regarding identified and non-identified students. Consults with other personnel such as the principal, nurse, occupational therapist, physical therapist, psychologist, director of exceptional children, social worker, home‑school coordinator, guidance counselor, other speech-language pathologists and special educators. Seeks assistance of teachers, parents and others to meet the communication needs of students. Consults/communicates with non-school agencies to enhance services and coordinates therapeutic services with those provided by non-school agencies. Makes recommendations and referrals for audiological, medical and related services. Working Environment The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires sitting, walking and standing. This job is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment. Work in this classification is considered light physical work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects.
