Structural Engineer

Overview GEI’s Chicago, Illinois office is seeking a motivated staff-level structural engineer to assist with complex and challenging projects at various locations in the Midwest area and throughout the United States. This is an excellent opportunity for a new engineer to learn from senior experts and gain experience on a variety of structural and geo‑structural projects. Essential Responsibilities & Duties Provide engineering support on a variety of projects, including building superstructures, foundation design, bridges, excavation support design, dams and spillways, specialty foundation design, traditional structural engineering, and forensic engineering. Support evaluation and design efforts for structural steel, reinforced concrete, dams, excavation support systems, foundations, and other above‑ and below‑grade structures. Assist with feasibility studies and other technical analysis to evaluate various building structural systems, construction methods, foundation options, excavation support systems, etc. Use geotechnical and structural software to perform analyses ranging from limit‑state‑equilibrium to two‑ and three‑dimensional finite element analyses. Perform non‑destructive testing and install instruments to monitor building movement and construction activities. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited college. M.S. in Structural Engineering from an accredited college (preferred). 2–6 years of structural engineering experience. Professional registration (or ability to obtain one). Coursework in steel design, concrete design, soil mechanics, and foundation design. Familiarity with analysis and design software (Tedds, ENERCALC, Mathcad, SAP2000, STAAD, RISA, etc.). Familiarity with drafting software (Revit, Civil3D, AutoCAD). Team‑oriented and able to meet deadlines. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Valid driver's license and willingness to work in the field as needed. Willingness to work in inclement weather. Ability to travel on temporary assignments. Light to medium physical demands, including occasional lifting (up to 20 lbs) and frequent walking or standing for up to 2 hours. Activity levels include occasional, frequent, and continuous with a distribution of 30 %/40 %/30 % of the day. Additional sensory requirements: near/far vision and color discrimination. Exposure risks are reasonable; no anticipated bloodborne pathogens or hazardous chemicals. The workday typically spans 8–12 hours with some flexibility for additional hours.
