Fire Inspector

Job Location: Glastonbury Town Hall - GLASTONBURY, CT 06033 Position Type: Part Time (20 hours or more). Salary Range: $32.02 - $40.02 hourly. This position with the Fire Marshal’s Office under Community Development is 19.5 hours per week with a varying schedule. Responsibilities Perform fire code inspections of buildings and public establishments and prepare related reports. Review plans and specifications to inform inspections, review abatement actions, and assure fire safety code compliance for building permits. Issue abatement orders where violations are found or where regulations concerning flammable and combustible liquids, flammable gases, hazardous materials, explosives, fireworks and fuel emergencies apply; conduct follow‑up inspections. Maintain current knowledge of fire safety codes and standards. Provide code consultation to property owners, developers, contractors, and the public; respond in a timely manner to complaints. Contribute to a respectful and safe work environment by fostering a culture of positive communication, ethical behavior, and emphasis on providing exceptional service to internal and external customers. Perform other duties as required. Maintain confidentiality of records and information as appropriate. Observe safe work practices and state traffic laws; represent the Town in a professional and courteous manner. Regularly attend and be punctual for work. Qualifications Knowledge of state statutes and adopted codes, local ordinances and standards pertaining to fire safety inspections, principles and practices of fire code inspection and enforcement, and state traffic laws. Ability to read and interpret safety and construction plans; interpret written, oral, or diagrammatic instructions; communicate findings in writing accurately, clearly and concisely; maintain records and accumulate statistical data; enforce fire code fairly and courteously, explaining requirements. Skill in interpersonal communication, establishing and maintaining effective working relationships, and providing a high level of customer service while executing regulatory duties. High School diploma or equivalent. Two (2) years of experience in fire prevention or a related field, including a combination of training and work experience. Physical and Mental Requirements Physical exertion such as walking over rough or difficult terrain; recurring standing, stooping, kneeling, twisting, climbing and maneuvering through tight and narrow passages; occasional lifting of moderately heavy items up to 25 pounds. Gross motor mobility for positioning ladders, fine motor dexterity for manipulating small parts. Subject to extreme weather conditions such as heat, humidity, wet and cold. Ability to see objects closely as in reading, and at a distance as in driving a vehicle; hear normal sounds with background noise, distinguish voice patterns and communicate through speech. License and Certification Certification by the Office of State Fire Marshal as a Fire Code Inspector. Driver’s License.
