E&S Casualty- Senior UW Specialist Specialty (Hybrid/Remote)

Position Overview As a senior underwriting specialist for The Hanover’s Specialty Alternative Markets team, you will support growth by identifying, soliciting, underwriting, and selling Specialty casualty accounts. You will apply advanced underwriting skills to provide insurance solutions that help customers manage risk while achieving profitable growth within portfolio and mix goals. In This Role, You Will Technical Underwriting: Thorough knowledge of business strategy, coverage segments, and partner/non‑partner accounts. Apply advanced underwriting concepts including risk selection, exposure identification, coverage implications, and loss analysis. Use pricing components and rating methodology to correlate price with exposure, financial analysis, and competitive positioning. Adhere to CAT guidelines and apply CAT aggregation strategies in decisions. Identify and explain coverage gaps and controls to agents to complete the value‑added proposition. Portfolio Management & Financial Acumen: Manage assigned portfolio to achieve growth, profitability, rate, retention, and mix targets. Leverage competencies to build profitable, mutually beneficial relationships with agencies and internal resources. Develop and execute portfolio business plans and special projects. Review key metrics and uncover trends that create new business opportunities. Implement profit‑improvement initiatives with agents using available resources. Coordinate with Specialty departments for cross‑sell opportunities. Sales Management: Identify and drive enhanced sell opportunities across lines of business and customer segments. Use value proposition to enhance agency economics, partner conversion, and product specialization. Prioritize and manage relationships and producer activities to improve yield and retention. Engage at the customer level for complex accounts within territory. Implement territory business plans and maintain a robust pipeline for future growth. Train agents on product knowledge to position Hanover as a market leader. Deliver sales presentations and close deals while uncovering customer needs and handling objections. What You Need To Apply Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience. 5‑7+ years of commercial E&S casualty underwriting experience. 5‑7+ years of agency‑relationship experience generating profitable business. Strong proficiency in underwriting core competencies; specialization in 1‑2 specialty areas possible. Proactive problem‑solving and project prioritization; a resource for complex risks. Adaptability, influence, and change advocacy. Leadership, mentorship, and knowledge sharing. Excellent communication and judgment to make sound decisions independently. Teamwork and collaborative mindset across diverse stakeholders.
