Advocating for Social Change: RNR Internship at Cass Community Social Services 2026 Center for Leadership & Community Engagement RNR Internship at Cass Community Social Services - Detroit, Michigan Position Description General Information: Fighting Poverty. Creating Opportunity. Building Community. Cass Community Social Services (Cass or CCSS) is a nonprofit organization in the City of Detroit which provides food, health care, housing, and jobs programs for people living in areas of concentrated poverty. The agency utilizes fourteen facilities for its programs, twelve of them within a six-block pedestrian "campus." Cass also blends a large number of volunteers into the work of the agency (over 6,000 annually); many of them participate as members of youth groups which come from across the country throughout the summer months. A student staff member at CCSS will be exposed to and immersed in hands‑on experiences in the theory and practice of an urban non‑profit. An intern will have the unique opportunity to interface with the staff, consumers/residents, and members of volunteer teams. The intern will also have an opportunity to immerse themselves in a project of their own interest selected from a list of possible projects. This internship will be supported by the RNR Foundation and will support Cass's administration, specifically focusing on volunteer management and issues of community development, homelessness and food insecurity. The ideal candidate will possess a strong desire to work collaboratively with student volunteers and staff members from various programs, challenge themselves and others in intellectual growth and development, and have a strong interest in community development, leadership, and diversity - economic, educational, racial, religious, etc. The candidate will live in a Cass owned property with other interns in proximity to Cass’ various programs and will be expected to actively engage and eat at least one meal each day with the CCSS residents and volunteers to help facilitate the immersion process. The CCSS Program Intern will be exposed to and immersed in hands‑on experiences in the theory and practice of an urban non‑profit. The intern will Help facilitate work projects and weekly educational/recreational activities with volunteer teams and be an active participant in the planning and organization of these efforts. Assist in manufacturing Green Industries products made by formerly homeless men and women (employment linked with sustainability). Conduct research for needs assessments and grant applications. Attend daily intern meetings with other undergraduate and graduate students at Cass. Always act as a representative and resource of the work of the Cass Community Social Services, answering questions and providing information to any interested parties. Be available 40 hours per week. Between three and eight of the hours may be during weeknights or weekends to accommodate volunteer teams. Other duties as assigned per needs of the administration and/or the community. Engage in intern meetings on a bi-weekly or monthly basis with the other two MI based RNR interns Skills gained by serving as a CCSS Program Intern: Interpersonal and professional communication skills Presentation planning and execution Professional skills within the realm of non‑profit and NGO work Data analysis and reporting skills Understanding of a professional office culture Ability to work with diverse populations and in a poor community Qualifications: Candidates must be a Rollins undergraduate student graduating December 2026 or later. Candidates must be able to serve a minimum of ten weeks from June 1, 2026 to August 2026. Ideal dates for CASS are Monday, June 1, 2026 through Saturday, August 8, 2026. Specific Internship Details and Compensation: The intern will receive a stipend of $6,250.00, which should be used for time on the job (compensation), necessary travel, on‑site living expenses, food and groceries, cultural outings, and academic credit internship costs. The intern will live on‑site with the community organization. Housing expenses will be taken from the stipend for the weeks that the intern is with CASS. The intern will receive the remainder of the stipend ($125 per week) disbursed on a bi weekly basis. The intern is also REQUIRED to participate in the Rollins College academic internship program and will receive four credits as a part of this experience. The selected candidate must register for the academic internship course before April 6, 2026 through the Center for Career & Life Planning. All RNR interns will also be required to participate in an orientation in late April.
