Law Clerk I - Court Services (1-year rotation)

Overview The Office of Court Administration at the South Carolina Judicial Branch is seeking a motivated individual to serve as a Law Clerk I. This one-year rotating position will fill three seats: Laurens, Richland County, and a statewide location. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Conduct legal research for retired judges and SC Court Administration as required. Coordinate directly with SC Court Administration and county clerks to schedule hearings and trials held by retired judges, which are not conducted during regular court terms. Receive and review incoming mail, email, and voicemail, responding promptly and ensuring correspondence is appropriately copied. Maintain a calendar of all terms of court assigned by SC Court Administration. Create a weekly folder with dockets, calendars, case notes, and orders for all assigned terms. Prepare cases by attending roster meetings, status conferences, and jury qualifications; receive case files and communicate with attorneys for voir dire questions, witness lists, and motions; prepare case memos as directed. Set up and break down courtrooms; manage judicial law books, notebooks, and computer equipment; research incoming orders and maintain a list of matters under advisement to be reported monthly by each judge. Read and understand all incoming advance sheets. Assist other lawyers and staff at SC Court Administration with duties and projects as assigned. Perform all other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications (Education and Experience) Juris Doctorate from an American Bar Association accredited law school and admission to or eligibility for admission to practice law in South Carolina within the first year of employment. Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics Knowledge Knowledge of South Carolina laws and rules. Understanding of legal research theories, including use of Westlaw and Lexis. Skills Microsoft Word proficiency. Microsoft Excel proficiency. Microsoft Outlook proficiency. WebEx proficiency. Legal writing. Attention to detail. Time management. Abilities Exercise a high level of discretion. Demonstrate a strong, consistent, and dependable work ethic. Interpret and apply state and federal law and judicial decisions. Analyze facts and express conclusions clearly, logically, and concisely. Prepare orders, memos, and other legal documents. Effectively plan and organize work activities and prioritize tasks. Work independently to meet deadlines. Communicate courteously and effectively, both orally and in writing. Establish and maintain good working relationships with judges, SCJB staff, attorneys, court personnel, and other stakeholders. Other Characteristics Must be able to lift and move files or boxes weighing 15–20 pounds. Must be able to travel overnight and have dependable transportation. Desirable Requirements (Education and Experience) Experience within the South Carolina Circuit courts as a clerk, extern, intern, Judicial Observational and Experience participant, or similar role. Participation in moot court, mock trial, legal clinic, or related practical experience.
