Job Description This role serves as shift charge person in the absence of department leadership, ensuring instrumentation and equipment availability, safe work practices, PPE monitoring, emergency response, orientation, training, inventory management, and facility process improvement. Responsibilities Serve as shift charge, prioritizing work to maintain instrumentation and equipment availability. Ensure safe work practices for all employees, monitor staff use of PPE in the decontamination area, and take appropriate actions during emergencies. Participate in new employee orientation, on‑job training, in‑service education, and facility process improvement initiatives. Oversee and monitor supply and equipment inventory required for the department. Rotate assignments among decontamination, surgical tray assembly, sterilization processes, and equipment management. Operate complex sterilization equipment and select the correct method of sterilization based on manufacturers’ instructions. Utilize the recall process for sterilization failures and notify leadership of positive results. Communicate effectively and use the chain of command to resolve issues. Monitor sterilization practices, keep accurate records, and take corrective action when parameters are not met. Ensure infection control standards are met; ensure daily cleaning and take corrective action for environmental controls. Identify and resolve issues associated with malfunctioning equipment. Respond to problem calls from all customers and communicate professionally with the hospital team. Other duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Excellent verbal and written communication. Knowledge of surgical instrumentation and medical terminology. Ability to understand customer needs and respond proactively, courteously, and efficiently. Adaptability to change and ability to work in a flexible environment. Leadership capability and ability to work under stress and tight deadlines. Understanding of microbiology, aseptic principles, and infection control. Knowledge of cross‑contamination prevention and nosocomial infections. Knowledge of instrument‑tracking software and computer skills. English reading, writing, and communication proficiency. Basic computer and inventory control skills. Follow instructions accurately, both written and verbal. Physical ability to lift 35 lbs. independently and ability to stand for prolonged periods. Interpersonal and critical‑thinking skills. Leadership and teamwork skills. Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including nights and weekends. Knowledge of all Central Sterile equipment and supplies. Knowledge of all instrumentation and processing procedures. Ability to articulate HSPA Standards and Guidelines. Ability to train new staff on job responsibilities and protocols. Ability to maintain appropriate inventory management. Primary point of contact for OR instrument issues. Prior management experience and strong background in Central Supply. Demonstrates the mission and values of the organization. Ability to perform as Supervisor during Leadership absence. Education Associate degree preferred. High School graduate or equivalent required. Technical/Vocational School preferred. Work Experience 1+ year experience preferred. Additional Information Basic Life Support – CPR certificate preferred. Licenses and Certifications Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) required OR Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT) required. Physical Requirements Must be able to lift 35 lbs. independently and stand for prolonged periods. See full requirements at Pay Range $20.81 - $33.29 per hour.
