Licensed Practical Nurse (Ambulatory Care)

Summary The Battle Creek VA Medical Center is hiring a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) for the Lansing VA Clinic. The LPN will be assigned to a primary care team and reports directly to the Nurse Manager of the Lansing clinic as part of the Ambulatory Care Nursing Service. Qualifications United States Citizenship: Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency; proficiency in basic written and spoken English is required (38U.S.C.7402(d) and7407(d)). Education: Graduate of a school of practical or vocational nursing approved by the appropriate state agency or an accredited program by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission. Military education or training accepted if qualified for full LPN/LVN licensure under VA policy. Current GS‑0620 LPN/LVN employee of the Veterans Health Administration who was converted under the relevant public laws. Individual with a license granted by a jurisdiction that does not require graduation from an approved school. Licensure: Active, full, current, unrestricted licensure as a Graduate Licensed Practical or Vocational Nurse in a U.S. state, territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia. Grade‑specific requirements: GS‑03: None beyond the basic requirements. GS‑04: Six months of qualifying experience as an LPN or LVN, or one year of experience in a supervised medical or nursing facility. GS‑05: Completion of at least one year of qualifying experience at the GS‑4 level or equivalent, with demonstrated ability to provide a full range of practical nursing care. GS‑06: At least one year of additional experience at the GS‑5 level or equivalent, with technical proficiency in initiating, performing, and completing assigned duties and appropriate documentation. Knowledge and skills for medication administration (oral, topical, subcutaneous, intramuscular, and, where permitted, intravenous) and emergency response. Ability to serve as a responsible team member, providing education to patients and families, and maintaining professional relationships. Experience in medical and diagnostic procedure assistance and preceptor roles as appropriate. Commitment to continuous learning and sharing new knowledge with staff. For more information on these qualification standards, visit Duties Provide direct patient care with knowledge, skills, and independence appropriate to the LPN role. Perform complex nursing care assignments and specialized practical nursing activities. Work is reviewed daily by the RN but the LPN operates with little supervision. Duties include demonstrating independent technical judgment and detailed knowledge of complex nursing skills. Act as leader or co–leader for a specific group of patients and as Charge Nurse when appropriate. Participate in planning, implementation, and evaluation of nursing care using focused assessment. Function as a preceptor when appropriate. Administer medications via all routes except intravenous. Educate patients and families to understand orders as documented in CPRS and monitor responses to medication and treatments. Report changes to providers and RNs and document effectiveness.
