Job Description

This is a non-merit position with the Iowa Department of Corrections. Candidates must follow the instructions in the "To Apply" section.

Comprehensive Clinical Care:

Provides comprehensive medical evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, and continuity of care for incarcerated patients in accordance with generally accepted standards of medical practice and Department of Corrections policies.

Performs admission physical examinations, chronic care clinics, sick call, periodic health assessments, preventive services, and medically necessary follow-up evaluations.

Orders, interprets, and documents laboratory tests, diagnostic imaging, and other diagnostic studies; prescribes medications and therapeutic interventions; initiates specialty referrals when clinically indicated; and maintains accurate, timely, and complete electronic health records.

Coordinates patient care with nursing staff, advanced practice providers, mental health professionals, pharmacists, dentists, custody staff, and outside healthcare providers to ensure safe, effective, and continuous medical care. Provides patient education and delivers care in a manner that promotes professionalism, ethical conduct, sound clinical judgment, and adherence to evidence-based medical practice.

Medical Consultation and Clinical Decision-Making:

Exercises independent medical judgment in the evaluation and management of patients with acute, chronic, and medically complex conditions. Provides medical consultation and clinical guidance to healthcare staff regarding patient assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, and continuity of care.

Assists in resolving complex clinical issues through interdisciplinary collaboration, evidence-based decision-making, and appropriate utilization of specialty and community healthcare resources.

Emergency Response and On-Call Responsibilities:

Responds to urgent and emergent medical conditions within the correctional setting by providing timely medical evaluation, treatment, and clinical decision-making within the scope of practice.

Participates in the physician on-call rotation to provide after-hours medical consultation and treatment recommendations for urgent patient care needs. Supports continuity of medical services through prompt assessment and management of emergent healthcare situations.

Quality Improvement, Compliance, and Professional Practice:

Maintains professional competence through continuing medical education, professional licensure, certification, and compliance with applicable federal and state laws, accreditation standards, Department policies, and generally accepted standards of medical practice. Participates in quality improvement initiatives, peer review, utilization review, chart audits, laboratory and diagnostic test review, committee assignments, policy development, and performance improvement activities designed to promote safe, effective, and evidence-based patient care.

Administrative and Other Assigned Duties:

Participates in required meetings, mandatory training, organizational initiatives, and special projects as assigned. Assists with implementation of departmental policies, procedures, and operational improvements. Performs other related duties consistent with the responsibilities of the position and the mission of the Iowa Department of Corrections.
