SUBSTITUTE BUS ATTENDANT - Transportation

Bus Attendant IUnder general supervision, maintains order and attends to the needs and safety of students being transported to and from schools.Duties and Responsibilities:Assists in loading and unloading special education students.Positions students in their seats, fastens harnesses, belts, restraints, seatbelts and other devices.Checks and records attendance.Maintains order by stopping fights, controlling excessive noise, and disruptive behavior.Keeps students clean when accidents or illness occur.Moves about the bus to attend to student needs and quiet disturbances.Assists students who have seizures and responds to other emergencies.Assists drivers in the loading and unloading of ambulatory and wheelchairs bound students.Informs drivers and supervisors of abnormal behavior or illnessMay use basic signs to communicate with some students.Positions in this class may also be assigned general maintenance and clean-up activities in the transportation department.Performs related work as required.Qualifications:Education and Experience:Experience as a practical nurse, attendant in a nursery or resident school, or working with handicapped children in any capacity is desirable.Licenses and Certifications:Valid California Class C driver's license issued by the California Department of Motor Vehicles within 30 days of hire or before driving any vehicle requiring this licenseKnowledge, Skills, and Abilities:Knowledge of behavior management techniquesKnowledge of proper lifting techniques in accordance with established guidelinesKnowledge of interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesyAbility to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with administrators, staff, students, and parentsAbility to work independently, with minimum direction, and make decisions within the framework of established guidelinesAbility to remain calm in stressful situationsAbility to understand and follow verbal and written instructionAbility to work effectively with all levels of district staff, parents, and studentsAbility to maintain consistent, punctual and regular attendanceWorking Conditions:School bus environmentConstant noiseContinuous contact with students and staff with frequent interruptions and significant distractionsContact with dissatisfied and/or uncooperative individualsInspect documents and other written materials with fine printCommunicate to exchange in person, in small groups, and/or on the telephoneOperate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordinationGood physical condition as determined by pre and post-employment inquiries and health reportsMove about school bus and facilities to conduct work including walking, sitting, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, climbing, standing, reaching with arms and hands, or balancing for long periods of timeLift and/or move the combined weight of students and adaptive equipmentSpecific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision and depth perceptionExposure to fumes, airborne particles, grease, oil or other motor vehicle fluidsExposure to and contact with blood or other bodily fluidsAbility to work a split-shift as requiredThis job description is not a complete statement of essential functions and responsibilities.
