Location: Toronto, ON hybrid (2 days a week)
Duration: 12 Months+

Job Description / Role Summary:

The Synapse Engineer (Remote) builds, optimizes, and maintains the Azure Synapse environment used to replace Alteryx workflows. The role implements pipelines, SQL transformations, orchestration, and security. They work closely with the onsite Data Modeler and Conversion Analyst to ensure end to end production-quality execution of migrated workloads.

Key Responsibilities:

• Build Synapse pipelines, SQL transformations, datasets, and linked services.
• Transformation exp in Synapse SQL, PySpark, or Data Flows.
• Synapse notebooks/pipelines, SQL, Pyspark, ADO for CI/CD, ESP scheduling
• Tune performance of dedicated SQL pools (partitioning, indexing, caching).
• Implement CI/CD pipelines in Azure DevOps or GitHub.
• Configure and manage data security, RLS, access roles, and auditing.
• Optimize ADLS Gen2 folder structures, file formats, and Delta/Parquet usage.
• Collaborate with the Data Modeller to ensure accurate implementation of models.
• Monitor Synapse environments, performance, costs, and autoscaling.
• Troubleshoot issues across ingestion, transformation, orchestration phases.
• Provide architectural guidance and platform best practices.

Required Experience:

• 5+ years in data engineering with 3+ years in Azure Synapse.
• Strong T SQL, ETL/ELT pipeline development, and workload optimization.
• Experience migrating Alteryx, SSIS, Databricks, or equivalent ETL systems.
• Knowledge of Delta Lake, Parquet, partitioning, schema evolution.
• CI/CD experience in Azure DevOps, Git, environment promotion.

Preferred Skills:

• Experience with retail or loyalty analytics workloads.
• Familiarity with Azure Purview or similar governance solutions.
