Automation Support Engineer

Department: Engineering

Reports to: Director of Engineering

Compensation: $120,000 - $130,000 yearly salary

About the Role

The Automation Support Engineer runs and supports existing workflows for hardware testing, system configuration, and OS deployment. The role troubleshoots failures and makes small script improvements with engineering guidance. Initial work will follow established procedures with engineering support. As proficiency grows, the engineer may take on more script maintenance and defined workflow improvements. Training covers company products, tools, and production processes. Advanced infrastructure administration and independent automation architecture design are outside the initial scope.

Key Responsibilities

1. Production Automation Support

• Run and monitor established automation workflows for hardware testing, validation, and system provisioning.
• Review logs and test results, reproduce failures, and perform initial checks to identify software, operating system, hardware, or connectivity issues.
• Resolve routine issues using documented procedures; escalate complex or recurring failures with clear findings and supporting logs.
• Work with production teams to restore normal operation and track issues through resolution.

2. System Setup and Basic Troubleshooting

• Install and configure Linux systems using approved images, tools, and procedures.
• Perform basic checks of services, permissions, network connectivity, and connected hardware.
• Follow documented instructions for BIOS settings, firmware updates, and Windows deployment as required.

3. Script Maintenance and Documentation

• Read, troubleshoot, and make small changes to existing Python or shell scripts with guidance and review.
• Test changes before production use and follow established version-control and change procedures.
• Maintain work instructions, troubleshooting notes, and issue records; suggest improvements to repetitive tasks.

4. Collaboration and Escalation

• Coordinate with engineering, production, and IT on automation support needs and communicate issue status clearly.
• Escalate complex automation, network, and access issues to engineering or IT.

Qualifications & Requirements

Required Skills & Abilities

• Working knowledge of Linux command-line tools, files, permissions, services, and logs.
• Basic scripting ability in Python or Bash, including reading existing scripts, making simple changes, and troubleshooting errors.
• Basic understanding of IP addressing and network connectivity troubleshooting.
• A methodical approach to solving technical problems, following procedures, and documenting results.
• Ability to communicate clearly, work with production and engineering teams, and recognize when to escalate.

Experience & Education

• Approximately 1–3 years of relevant technical support, Linux support, hardware testing, or automation experience preferred. Relevant internships, technical training, and hands-on projects will also be considered.
• Technical diploma, associate degree, relevant certification, or equivalent practical experience. A bachelor’s degree is not required.

Preferred Experience

• Exposure to server hardware, BIOS/firmware, operating system installation, or manufacturing and test environments.
• Familiarity with Git, Ansible, Windows deployment, or remote system access tools.

Training and Development
