The Police Officer position at the College of the Holy Cross focuses on protecting life and property while supporting a safe campus environment through law enforcement, emergency response, investigations, and community engagement. Officers are required to be Massachusetts POST-certified, possess strong judgment and communication skills, and perform physically demanding duties across varied conditions. The role includes enforcing state laws and campus regulations, providing safety and security services, conducting investigations, and participating in crime prevention and communication efforts. Candidates must pass a medical exam, drug screening, psychological evaluation and comprehensive background investigation. Must possess a valid License to Carry a firearm. Must be available for all shifts, weekends and overtime. Position is a full-time with structured compensation and benefits, including a pension and tuition assistance as eligible. Job Description JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY The position of Police Officer will support the overall mission of the College of the Holy Cross Police Department to provide a safe and secure living and learning environment for all members of, and visitors to, our community. The Holy Cross Police Department is employs POST-certified officers only. Officers who are currently POST-certified must have no disciplinary record. JOB DESCRIPTION- Protection of life and property.
- Provides public safety-related services (i.e., escorts, lock-out assists, etc.) equally to all of the members of and visitors to the community in a manner that demonstrates dignity and respect for all.
- Actively seek to identify safety and security related problems and to take the necessary steps to solve those problems quickly and efficiently.
- Promote and participate in crime prevention and safety awareness programs on campus and in the peripheral property areas near campus.
- Prevent criminal activity from occurring on the campus and in the peripheral property areas near campus.
- Respond quickly to emergency calls for police services. These include reports of crimes, criminal activities, medical emergencies, environmental emergencies, fire and intrusion alarms and accidents. Officers are required to conduct thorough investigations into these police emergency incidents, and to submit thorough and accurate written reports in all cases.
- Perform safety and security inspections of all campus buildings and grounds both on foot and in vehicles.
- Enforce the laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and applicable Holy Cross safety, security and traffic regulations.
- Take proper police action at the crime scene, administer first aid, gather evidence, locate and interview witnesses, and make arrest; appear in court to present evidence and testify against persons accused of crimes.
- Possess a solid working knowledge of criminal law and criminal procedure. Ascertain validity of information and/or secure evidence for the arrest of persons alleged to have committed a crime; search for and preserve evidence; interview suspects, prisoners, complainants, and witnesses, information about crimes; complete detailed reports.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Must be Massachusetts POST-certified or immediately eligible for Massachusetts POST certification, and eligible for Special State Police Officer certification under MGL chapter 22C section 63.
- Must have a valid Massachusetts motor vehicle operator's license.
- Must have a current Massachusetts Class A Large Capacity License to Carry a Firearm and successfully pass the MPTC's firearms qualification program using the weapon issued by the Holy Cross Police Department and any other required and/or In-Service Training.
- Candidate must pass a thorough Background Investigation and CORI check.
- Upon preliminary offer candidate must undertake and pass full medical exam, drug testing and psychological exam.
- Previous experience in law enforcement, preferably 3-5 years.
- Physical demands are those in excess of sedentary work; must be able to remain on feet for extended periods of time, stoop, kneel, crouch, lift, carry, push, pull, climb stairs, balance, walk, and run; must be able to access all facilities, on foot, to respond to emergency calls for service to include the upper-most floors of campus buildings when elevators are not available; must be able to conduct visual surveillance of individuals and surroundings.
- Ability to cope with situations firmly, courteously, tactfully and with respect for the rights of others. Analyze situations quickly and objectively determine a proper course of action to be taken. Understand and carry out oral and written instructions. Write and speak effectively. Learn and become proficient in both the technology and clerical systems utilized by the Department.
- Cannot have been convicted of a felony crime.
- Must be dependable, honest, possess good moral character, sound judgment, and effective interpersonal communication skills.
- Must be a team player and work collaboratively within the Department and with the community.

- Must be physically able to operate and communicate using a variety of machines and equipment including firearm, baton, automobile, office equipment, radio, telephone, etc.
- Work includes considerable exposure to unusual elements, such as severe weather/ temperatures and loud noises.
- Work environment involves moderate exposure to hazards and physical risks to personal safety; must be physically fit and able to defend community members and oneself from physical assault.
- Must be able to wear the required uniform and equipment
- Must be able to work all shifts, including weekends, holidays, and overtime shifts as required - overtime is required.
- This is a full-time, non-exempt position with associated benefits, including a private pension.
- MPTC Academy-trained: $28.00 to $36.00 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications, in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement.
- Hourly rate for any new hire with a start date of or after July 1, 2026, for MPTC-Academy trained will be $28.84 to $37.08 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications, in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement.
- Additional shift differentials apply. Overtime and detail opportunities are available as outlined in the labor agreement.
- This is a 4 and 2 schedule as staffing allows.
- This will likely start as 3rd shift, 11pm-7am. Shift bids occur twice a year and are awarded by seniority.
