Summary: The Emergency Department Access Representative is responsible for registering all patients in both adult and pediatric emergency departments. This role involves completing the registration process for emergency patients and managing direct admits sent to the emergency department. Additionally, the representative collects patient liabilities upon discharge as appropriate.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Medical terminology proficiency is required within 90 days of employment. One to two years of insurance or clerical experience in a hospital or medical office setting is preferred. Familiarity with insurance processes and payment collection is advantageous. Proficiency with Microsoft Windows and basic computer functionality is necessary. The role demands strong typing and data entry skills to meet departmental productivity standards. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential, along with demonstrated customer service abilities catering to diverse cultural and economic backgrounds. Critical thinking, problem-solving, and multitasking skills are required to handle the dynamic needs of patients, families, and visitors effectively.

Physical and Work Environment: The position requires the ability to communicate orally, see, and hear to collect information accurately. Dexterity to operate office equipment is necessary. The job involves extended periods of sitting or standing, with exposure to low to moderate noise levels. Tasks include answering telephone calls, extensive use of personal computers and other business machines, and physical activities such as bending, reaching, pushing, and pulling file drawers. The representative may assist with patient transport and baggage handling, regularly lifting or moving up to 10 pounds, frequently up to 25 pounds, and occasionally up to 50 pounds.

Work Schedule: This is a full-time night shift position, with possible periodic shift rotations and regular days off.

Education and Experience: Medical terminology knowledge is required within the first 90 days. Preferred candidates have 1-2 years of insurance or clerical experience in healthcare settings.
