Position Overview The full-time Chaplain at St. Paul’s Episcopal School plays a vital role in fostering spiritual formation, pastoral care, and service leadership within our school community. As the spiritual leader, the Chaplain will oversee chapel services, religious instruction, and student pastoral care, ensuring Episcopal values remain central to daily school life. As the Religious Studies Teacher, the Chaplain will be responsible for teaching weekly religion classes for students from PreK-4 through 8th grade. The Chaplain will plan and lead chapel services and periodic Eucharists. At St. Paul’s, Christian character and behavior are emphasized throughout all aspects of school life. The Chaplain works closely with the Head of School to communicate the school’s Episcopal identity and its commitment to inclusion, diversity, equity, and belonging. This individual is appointed by the Head of School and approved by the Rector. The Chaplain is a member of the school’s senior leadership team and reports to the Head of School for operational matters and to the Rector for ecclesial matters. Key Responsibilities Worship Plan developmentally appropriate worship services (including weekly chapel and monthly Eucharist) in alignment with the Book of Common Prayer and its approved alternatives. Collaborate with the Rector, associate rector, music director, technology team, and faculty to organize and deliver three weekly chapel services for students and staff, including a separate weekly service for our two- and three-year-olds. Encourage student and faculty participation in worship. Maintain and strengthen the school’s Episcopal identity and upholding Anglican tradition, while honoring all faith traditions. Ensure all worship practices comply with church and school safeguarding policies. Sustains a school-wide curriculum for religion classes that focus on both the Judeo-Christian tradition and other major world religions that support students in understanding their own religious/spiritual traditions Teach weekly religion classes to all levels of students from PreK-4 to 8th grade Fulfill all faculty responsibilities Pastoral Care Provide compassionate pastoral support to students, faculty, and families. Promote social/emotional well‑being and spiritual development across the community. Foster an environment where all members of the school feel seen, valued, and respected in their own spiritual journeys. Handle sensitive matters with care, discretion, and professionalism. Community Engagement & Service Learning Collaborate with the Service Learning Coordinator to ensure that service initiatives are mission‑aligned and grounded in Episcopal values. Promote student engagement in community service and outreach. Actively support diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging initiatives across campus. Qualifications Master of Divinity required. Elementary Education degree preferred. Ordained Episcopal priest or deacon preferred; open to lay chaplains or qualified candidates from other traditions who can actively promote the Episcopal identity of the school. Experience working with children and youth in an educational or parish setting. Strong understanding of the Episcopal Church and its traditions, with the ability to model and communicate the school’s mission. A deep respect for and understanding of other major world religions. Commitment to nurturing spiritual growth in students from a variety of backgrounds. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Strong organizational and time‑management skills. Technological proficiency, including Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and a willingness to learn new tools.
