Clinical Lab Scientist - Nights

Perform test procedures in Transfusion Service, report test results manually and automatically, operate laboratory instrumentation & equipment to generate accurate test results, troubleshoot errant instrumentation, follow quality control procedures, and work in high‑volume setting. Responsibilities Task A: Perform Transfusion Service Procedures, both routine and problem solving Perform all tests using manual methods and automated instruments per procedures, accurately, without deviation, within completion times. Review/validate and enter test results and interpretations in the LIS accurately. Investigate transfusion reaction investigations immediately per procedure; perform clerical checks, repeat testing, quarantine co‑components and notify resident. Recognize and follow through on unexpected or abnormal results by initiating problem‑solving techniques and notifying a supervisor and/or resident. Perform all duties of “Lead/traffic tech” when assigned, including successful management of Emergency Release and Massive Transfusion Protocol products, and follow up of pending tests and product orders. Perform all duties related to inventory entry, verify data in UNOS website, allocate, modify and issue Organs and Vessels. Perform, document, and analyze instrument and manual QC testing results; repeat tests with different lot numbers or initiate troubleshooting when results are out of range. Notify supervisor of problem results or reagents. Consult reagent manufacturers’ instructions and section’s procedure manuals for less common tests. Complete quality control tasks as assigned; record results legibly and completely on the appropriate log sheets. Recognize and investigate unexpected QC results; quarantine suspect reagent lots, communicate findings to Specialist/Supervisor. Complete all documentation concurrently with neat and legible writing (ink or LIS). Perform file updates or result corrections in LIS following procedures, with clear documentation; inform supervisor for any corrections. Take responsibility for errors, notify supervisor, complete documentation in work records and electronic variance reporting program. Strive to have fewer than three (3) non‑computer clerical or “human” errors per year, including labeling and return‑to‑stock errors. Strive to avoid any error or break in procedure that results in issuing the wrong unit of blood. Complete training and competency within assigned time frames; stay current on procedural changes, memos, staff meeting minutes and other communications. Work successfully without close supervision; use sound judgment. Replenish supplies at work station; clean and organize work areas at end of shift. Receive, log, and store reagents and supplies per procedure. Assist coworkers when tasks are complete or during emergencies; serve as a resource to hospital lab technicians. Assist with training of new staff or students as assigned. Adhere to infection control and personal protection guidelines; wear lab coat, gloves and face protection when handling samples; refrain from smoking, drinking, or eating in and around work areas. Organize and efficiently manage assigned tasks to finish by shift end. Inform the next shift of all ongoing problems and pending orders. Maintain a respectful and professional attitude at all times. Adhere to all policies and procedures established by UCSF Clinical Labs and medical center policies. Task B: Communicate effectively. Enter data/test results into computer accurately. Demonstrate effective communication skills when giving information to hospital personnel regarding blood availability, departmental policies and procedures, donor and autologous blood. Assist with answering phone calls and in‑person questions; convey information accurately and concisely. Maintain a professional and respectful demeanor. Routinely record the time of a telephone report on the requisition, including the name of the person to whom the report is given. Correctly enter results in the LIS, with sufficient and clear detail for department use. Strive not to make more than three (3) computer errors per year in each of the following categories: entry of blood components into inventory and status changes; entry of test requests and blood component orders, including missing tests or results. Task C: Use and/or operate Blood Bank equipment correctly. Operate blood bank equipment and analytical instruments safely. Recognize malfunctions and notify supervisor or specialist. Discontinue or prevent use of equipment failing to maintain acceptable performance or temperature using the Out of Service tag system. Initiate troubleshooting on any instrument when a malfunction occurs; record malfunction and corrective actions on logs, and initiate a service call to vendor or repair service. Perform maintenance on equipment as assigned or instructed; document tasks and results on appropriate logs. Never modify equipment or settings without supervisor approval. Task D: Perform additional tests, projects or special studies when requested by a supervisor. Complete the testing of survey material, special studies, SOP validations, or projects within the agreed time frame with a supervisor; record results legibly and completely. Initiate problem reports, online variance or incident reports to document injuries, complaints, or errors. Qualifications Required Qualifications Bachelor of Science degree. A valid California Department of Health Clinical Laboratory Scientist license or a limited license in Immunohematology. Maintain active license and follow Clinical Lab CLS licensure policy. Recent experience performing clinical lab testing in Transfusion Service. Preferred Qualifications Prefer two years’ blood bank or transfusion service experience in a high‑volume lab within the last five years, including but not limited to: selection and crossmatch of blood for sensitized or problem recipients; antibody identification and titers; serologic follow‑up of transfusion reactions; blood bank quality control procedures; problems associated with transfusion of newborns; use of hospital and laboratory information (computer) systems; experience performing testing on an automated platform.
