Newport News Shipbuilding partners with the Virginia Ship Repair Association, local community colleges, and maritime training facilities to offer the Marine Trades Training (MTT) program. The welding trainee program runs once a month with 8–10 students per class and is held at Virginia Peninsula Community College (Hampton, VA), Tidewater Community College (Portsmouth, VA), or Camp Community College (Suffolk, VA). Each unpaid program lasts three weeks (120 hours), Monday‑Friday, 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Upon completion, trainees qualify through the shipyard’s start‑of‑the‑art welding school and begin performing structural and pipe welds for aircraft carriers and submarines. Responsibilities • Qualify through the welding school and perform tack, fillet, and full‑penetration welding on steel foundations and pipe joints. • Use SMAW, FCAW, GMAW, and GTAW processes in all positions with manual and mechanized techniques. • Meet nondestructive testing requirements, including visual, ultrasonic, and radiographic inspections. • Receive further training in visual inspection, fire‑watch protocols, carbon arcing, and equipment troubleshooting. • Work in various weather conditions, extreme heights, small confined spaces, and all‑weather environments requiring safety focus and physical agility. Qualifications Complete a 3‑week (unpaid) training program (120 hours, Monday‑Friday, 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.). Take measurements or be willing to learn. Undergo background investigation and drug screen. Pass physical agility test. Kneel, squat, crawl, bend, stoop, and climb daily. Lift at least 40 pounds. Perform overhead work. Work overtime as needed. Be clean‑shaven to wear a respirator. Work outdoors year‑round, all weather conditions. Work at extreme heights. Work in small, tight, confined spaces. Willing to work any shift. Preferred High school graduate or equivalent.
