Registered Nurse - Pediatric Electrophysiology (BCH-Cross Bay)

Job Summary Under general supervision, guided by the policies and procedures of the Medical Center and Ambulatory Services, and in collaboration with providers and administrative management, the Nurse Care Coordinator for Pediatric Electrophysiology works autonomously, utilizing the nursing process, to assess, plan, coordinate, implement and evaluate patient care within the ambulatory, procedural, and inpatient settings. This clinician is experienced and highly skilled with an in-depth knowledge and expertise in electrophysiology studies, CIED implantation, CIED interrogation, CIED remote monitoring, and inpatient bedside EP procedures. In the ambulatory setting, the Nurse Care Coordinator for Pediatric Electrophysiology is responsible for coordinating outpatient services and needs for a panel of pediatric, adolescent, and young adult patients and providers. His/her responsibilities include independent CIED (cardiac implantable electronic device) interrogation in clinic, reviewing, interpreting and triaging CIED remote monitoring, educating patients and families on CIED care and remote monitoring results, supporting cardiology fellows and nursing colleagues with CIED education and lectures on interpretation of CIED interrogation results, providing rhythm teaching to patients and families, and participating in QI projects to improve safety and quality of patient outcomes. In the inpatient setting, the Nurse Care Coordinator for Pediatric Electrophysiology will act as a liaison to ensure continuity of care for patients and their families who have undergone EP procedures including EP studies and CIED implants. Responsibilities include running the GE systems during EP procedures, supporting physicians with pacing and waveform interpretation, assisting physicians for CIED implantation and inpatient EP bedside procedures, collaborating with inpatient nursing and provider teams to assist with patient and family education, and complex care coordination and management, including comprehensive CIED care and management. The Nurse Care Coordinator for Pediatric Electrophysiology must have the ability to perform and prioritize multiple tasks and work well with staff, patients, families, and providers. A high degree of independence, initiative, assertiveness, and diplomacy are necessary in dealing with faculty, staff, and patients in a complex environment. Essential Functions Clinical Knowledge and Skills Management Assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates appropriate interventions for patients referred to Pediatric Electrophysiology. Integrates nursing theory, research, and knowledge of Pediatric Electrophysiology. Maintains knowledge base consistent with advances in pediatric electrophysiology treatment. Performs technical procedures safely, legally, effectively and efficiently. Utilizes computer technology for data collection, documentation, communication and research. Proficient in Apex. Participates in research protocols as directed by superior. Provides appropriate care based on patient age and needs. Clinical Organization Manages clinical situations with advanced skills, incorporating patient and family physical, psychosocial, and cultural needs. Utilizes the nursing process for a group of patients in accordance with policies and procedures. Establishes and revises priorities for patient care activities. Seeks consultation, supervision, or assistance when unable to perform procedures effectively. Manages telephone triage of patient symptoms, coordinates patient evaluations, assists with patient teaching. Patient Care Management Acts as patient advocate and facilitates family participation in decisions regarding care. Supervises patient care and delegates appropriate components to promote efficiency. Provides consistent and timely feedback to team members. Care Agencies Functions as contact person to triage patient care requests and referrals. For hospitalized patients, follows patient status and engages in disposition changes for appropriate discharge. Provides ongoing follow‑up with patients to ensure understanding of condition, plan of care, and follow‑up needs. Conducts follow‑up with post‑acute care providers, pharmacies, other providers, and insurance companies. Nursing Process / Documentation Contributes to data collection for pediatric electrophysiology. Screens patients for pain and complications. Prioritizes patient needs and assists with plan of care. Prepares patients for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Responds to emergency clinical issues. Documents patient outcomes and responses to interventions. Develops alternate approaches to patient and family care. Identifies learning needs and barriers, collaborates with disciplines, and involves family in teaching. Participates in evaluation and revision of patient education materials. Communication Responds to emotional needs of patients and families with sensitivity. Interacts with patients, families, caregivers and staff in a supportive manner. Maintains telephone standards and responds to calls and emails promptly with thorough documentation. Listens respectfully and demonstrates tact and diplomacy. Accepts constructive feedback and facilitates problem resolution with the health‑care team. Professionalism Continuous professional development and meets educational needs. Maintains current California RN license, CPR, CCDS, RCES, and other required certifications. Meets annual review, PPD, and schedule commitments. Adheres to dress code, infection control, and workplace policies. Participates in performance improvement projects and maintains knowledge of policies. Protects patient rights and confidentiality. Supports cost containment efforts and promotes research activities. Leadership Identifies problems, devises and implements plan of resolution, and reports unresolved issues. Works as a resource and mentor for staff and students. Incorporates new procedures and knowledge into practice. Required Qualifications Three (3) or more years of clinical RN experience in a pediatric electrophysiology lab within the last 3 years. Completed CIED training course. Recent and consistent participation in clinical quality projects and staff education. Flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations. Preferred Qualifications Database skills. Research experience. Leadership of clinical quality projects and staff education. Clinical RN experience in an ambulatory setting. Nationally recognized specialty certification. BSN degree. Licenses / Certifications CCDS (Certified Cardiac Device Specialist). RCES (Registered Cardiac Electrophysiology Specialist). Current California RN license. American Heart Association CPR Certification. American Heart Association PALS Certification. Salary Information The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.
