The unit runs more like an ICU, with strong drip experience required. The unit accepts contract assignments of 13 weeks, with 36 or 48 hours available. Target nurse-to-patient ratios are 1:3–4. The unit operates with 18 patients across 20 beds as an ICU stepdown, caring for post rapid response team patients and a wide range of acuity levels. Only one pressor drip per patient is permitted on the unit; patients requiring more are transferred to the ICU.Key ResponsibilitiesProvide care to a diverse patient population including adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.Manage patients presenting with respiratory distress, unstable hemodynamics, withdrawal, GI bleeds, and post-operative diagnoses including GYN, GU, GI, thoracotomies, neuro, and ortho surgeries.Provide pre/post OB care with complications, including Pitocin management.Monitor patients using bedside telemetry monitors with remote backup; recognize and treat dysrhythmias.Manage arterial lines, BIPAP, chest tubes, and tracheostomies (no vents on unit).Administer vasoactive and specialty drips including Cardizem, Nitro, Precedex, Cardene, Levophed, Dopamine, Dobutamine, and Neo drips.Utilize Pyxis and Epic systems for medication dispensing and documentation.Float as needed to the sister unit, which is an ICCU.Work every other weekend as required by unit scheduling.Adhere to schedule created by Nurse Manager; no block scheduling permitted.Wear Navy, White, or a combination of the two for scrubs.Required SkillsExperience with arterial lines and titrating vasoactive dripsPCU / DOU / IMC / Stepdown experienceTelemetry (on-unit monitoring)Interpretation of dysrhythmiasManagement of dysrhythmiasUse of Rapid Response TeamsIV insulin protocolsBlood Product AdministrationCentral line care and managementPeripheral Line Care and ManagementPICC line managementHeparin ProtocolsCVA managementChest tubes – Emerson/Pleur-evacExternal CPAP/BIPAPHigh Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC)Nasal CannulaNon-invasive airway managementTracheostomy ManagementIsolation PrecautionsIV start experienceConscious sedation experienceProficiency with Pyxis and Epic systemsRequired ExperienceMinimum 2 years of RN experience requiredFirst-time travelers acceptedLocal candidates acceptedEducation RequirementsACLS certification requiredBCLS certification requiredNIH Stroke Scale certification requiredMust pass EKG Testing prior to start for this specialtyWork Environment / Physical RequirementsHigh-acuity stepdown/PCU unit that runs more like an ICUNo ventilators on unit; patients requiring more than one pressor drip are transferred to the ICUFloating required as needed to sister unit (ICCU)Every other weekend requirement12-hour day shifts36 or 48 hours per week availableHospital orientation in week one; traveler must be available for classes each dayFlu vaccination required (medical/religious exemptions only)Important NotesRTO (Return to Origin) after booking is NOT allowed and is NOT allowed to be worked out onsite.
