• Job Description

The Phlebotomist II plays a key role in providing high-quality patient care by performing blood draws and other specimen collections, processing and preparing samples for testing, and supporting efficient workflow across multiple clinical locations. This position involves troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations while delivering excellent customer service to a primarily adult and geriatric patient population, with pediatric patients as needed.

• Responsibilities
  • Perform blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles, ensuring safe and accurate venipuncture for patients ranging from pediatric to geriatric.
  • Collect and store specimens, including blood, urine, and fecal samples, in accordance with established procedures and test requirements.
  • Clearly and courteously explain the venipuncture and specimen collection process to patients to promote comfort and understanding.
  • Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify that all test requisitions or computer labels match the script with complete accuracy.
  • Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders to maintain specimen integrity.
  • Store specimen samples at the appropriate temperature and place them in the correct collection containers or tubes based on protocol.
  • Follow detailed procedures for packaging specimens for transport, ensuring compliance with protocols to preserve specimen quality.
  • Understand and fully interpret physicians’ orders related to laboratory testing and specimen collection.
  • Accurately label specimens and follow transport procedures as outlined by protocol to maintain chain of custody and sample integrity.
  • Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety and infection control standards.
  • Attend annual department trainings and maintain up-to-date knowledge of phlebotomy practices and regulatory requirements.
  • Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to callers when appropriate to satisfy inquiries in a professional manner.
  • Perform specimen processing after collection, including centrifugation and preparation for laboratory analysis when needed.
  • Handle a high volume of draws, typically 30–40 per shift, while maintaining accuracy, efficiency, and patient-centered care.
  • Work primarily with adult and geriatric patients, while also performing pediatric blood draws, including heel sticks on babies.
  • Provide feedback and recommendations to support improved workflow and operational efficiency within the clinics.
  • Travel between multiple clinic locations in a float capacity, reliably reporting to assigned sites according to the schedule provided.

• Work Environment

This role is based in a float position across a variety of clinic settings in the Chicago area, including locations such as Downtown Chicago, Schaumburg, Oak Park, and Ravenswood. The likely home base location will be 3046 N Halsted in Chicago, IL, where initial training will occur during the first two weeks of employment. The phlebotomist will travel between sites and will receive a schedule 1–2 weeks in advance, clearly indicating where to report each day. The work schedule requires availability Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., with rotating Saturday shifts from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; when scheduled for a Saturday shift, a weekday off will be provided, and Saturday shifts typically occur about once per month. Mileage for travel between locations is reimbursed at a set rate, supporting the mobile nature of the role. The work environment involves clinical laboratory and patient care settings where standard clinical attire and adherence to safety and infection control protocols are expected.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Itasca, IL.

The pay range for this position is $19.00 - $23.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.

This is a fully onsite position in Itasca,IL.
