Emergency Dept Technician

Yale New Haven Health

Overview To be part of our organization, every employee should understand and share in the YNHHS Vision, support our Mission, and live our Values. These values – integrity, patient-centered, respect, accountability, and compassion – must guide what we do as individuals and professionals, every day. Responsibilities Assist the patient care unit and Nursing Department by providing direct physical patient care following accepted procedures and the department‑specific skills checklist. Embrace teamwork by actively cooperating versus competing or being non‑committal, and foster shared goals over narrower interests. Show knowledgeability, accountability, and fiscal responsibility by continually seeking ways to sustain and improve one’s skills. Exhibit flexibility and open‑mindedness by listening to others’ opinions while seeking the best ideas. Treat the people we serve as guests by welcoming patients, visitors, and staff warmly, speaking politely, maintaining eye contact, and addressing individuals by name whenever possible. Listen attentively to patients, visitors, and staff, using active listening techniques to understand needs and resolve problems promptly. Respect privacy and confidentiality of patients, visitors, and staff by handling patient‑related discussions discreetly and avoiding gossip in public areas. Present a professional image by wearing a name badge prominently, adhering to the dress code, and ensuring appearance is appropriate for a professional role. Answer the telephone professionally, following department guidelines, introducing oneself and the department, offering assistance, and using a polite tone of voice. Maintain a clean and safe environment in patient rooms and nursing work areas, ensuring regulatory compliance and keeping hallways clear. Anticipate and provide services by recognizing cues that patients or visitors need assistance, asking “May I help you?”, escorting them, and encouraging questions. Demonstrate knowledge and skills to provide age‑appropriate care, applying principles of growth and development, assessing patient status, interpreting data, and following unit, area, or department policies and procedures. Document care accurately, completely, and in a timely manner in the Electronic Medical Record. Identify the need to reorder supplies and coordinate with the Unit Secretary or Office Manager following established procedures. Ensure nursing work areas and patient rooms are adequately stocked with supplies and equipment carts. Obtain and record vital signs and weights as delegated by the Registered Nurse. Apply splints, orthopedic devices, and perform crutch walking training under the direction of the Registered Nurse, Nurse Manager, or Physician. Monitor and provide care to patients in the Behavioral Health Unit as directed by the Registered Nurse, Nurse Manager, or Physician. Greet and receive patients at the triage window, applying Service Excellence Standards and assisting the Registered Nurse with patient flow and room placement. Identify changes in patient condition and communicate significant observations to the nurse promptly. Perform 12‑lead EKGs and report findings to the Physician. Conduct hourly rounds on assigned patients in collaboration with the Registered Nurse. Assist patients with activities of daily living and personal hygiene needs. Perform phlebotomy on appropriate patients as delegated by the Registered Nurse after completing phlebotomy training. Demonstrate compliance with fall prevention protocols. Compile, secure, and document patient personal belongings following established policies and procedures. Perform glucose monitoring and document results in the patient’s medical record. Accurately identify patients using the Safety Absolute of Name and Date of Birth. Provide a clear and concise handoff to the incoming staff member at shift’s end. Provide and participate in post‑mortem care. Apply remote telemetry boxes to patients as directed by the Registered Nurse. Assist in the care of patients in restraints following established policies and procedures. Demonstrate safe technique for ambulation, transfers, and use of assistive devices. Assist patients with toileting and elimination; deliver, collect, and empty bedpans, urinals, and bedside commodes. Function independently with treatments, procedures, and equipment within unit‑specific departmental competencies. Assist the Physician with preparation and set‑up for suture repair as outlined in departmental policies and procedures. Attend 75 % of staff meetings annually. Qualifications High school graduate or equivalent. Experience 1–2 years related job experience preferred. Licensure A minimum of a high school diploma or GED; and CNA or other certification, i.e., Medical Assistant, Phlebotomy Technician, EMT, or Student Nurse who has completed one semester of clinical experience. Special Skills The employee must be highly flexible and willing to perform each role as needed and directed depending on the needs of the patient care unit and Nursing Department. Must be able to read, write, and speak English clearly, possess basic clerical and computer skills, experience with medical terminology, knowledge of basic patient care, basic mathematical skills, and the ability to prioritize and adjust work plans based on patient needs as directed. Physical Demand Standing/walking for more than half of the day. (Sitting for most of the day when working as a monitor tech.) Frequently bending, reaching, pushing, pulling, twisting and lifting. Must be able to push/pull/lift patients ranging from 5 to 300 pounds. May be exposed to infectious diseases. Exposure to physical, mental, and emotional illness, end‑of‑life situations, and death.
