Job Summary

The Finance Manager is critical to the daily operations of the Hematology and Oncology Division. The individual works under the general supervision of the Division Manager to oversee the extensive financial operations of the division. This position will manage two financial analysts (directly) and ten research finance analysts (indirectly), and is directly and independently responsible for the Division's financial operations.


The incumbent is responsible for overseeing the effective and efficient budgetary and financial management of the Division's resources encompassing $146M that is a mix of funds flow (profees), division gifts, faculty gifts, endowment income, discretionary funds, and financial commitments to faculty for recruitment and retention. Incumbent is responsible for ensuring successful internal controls; compliance with gift and endowment restrictions; compliance with UC, campus and DOM policies and procedures; continual process improvement; and risk management. Incumbent serves as a resource for guidance within the division, particularly on UC, DOM, and division policies, with a concentration on financial management requirements related to UC accounting, purchasing, travel reimbursement, and gifts and endowments.

The Finance Manager independently conducts in-depth financial and management analysis to support the division's strategic objectives. Responsibilities include oversight of the annual budget preparation; oversight of the monthly reports used by the Division Manager in decision support; preparation of the annual faculty incentives for clinical and research activities to drive the missions; preparation and maintenance of the expected clinical effort of faculty members and their cFTE-based wRVU targets; management of the clinical fellowship program finance.


The Finance Manager serves as a resource for guidance, functioning as advisor to the Division Manager, Division Chief, and 100+ faculty members on finance-related issues, exercising judgement and determining appropriate action. The individual is responsible for oversight of prospective and retroactive funding updates for faculty and staff; oversight of an extensive array of clinical pay plans with monthly payments; oversight of ledger verification; approval of journals; leads in the creation, maintenance and reporting of budget processes and financial planning. Responsible for development and monitoring of policies and procedures for division finance operations.


Responsible for leading development and implementation of optimal workflows, and facilitating collaboration and sharing of best practices within the division for related workflows and/or activities, such as purchasing, reimbursement, and ledger reconciliation.

Department Description

The Division of Hematology/Oncology is one of the largest and most complex divisions in the Department of Medicine. Currently, the Division has 100 Full-time faculty, 15 emeritus and volunteer faculty, 25 ACGME and non-ACGME fellows, 24 post-doctoral fellows, 58 non-faculty academics, and 51 administrative, research, and programmatic staff. The Division's primary research, clinical and teaching functions are primarily split between the Parnassus and Mission Bay campuses, although the faculty, fellows, and staff have appointments and clinical, research, and educational activities at ZSFG, and VAMC as well.

In addition, the division has significant and complex financial and administrative relationships with the Department of Medicine (DOM) and the UCSF Health System. There are large patient care programs in the sections noted above, as well as large clinical, federal, and privately supported research programs along with faculty laboratories.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Six or more years of relevant experience, which includes five or more years of management experience and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Advanced knowledge of finance policies, practices, and systems.
  • Ability to identify, collect, and analyze information from multiple sources.
  • Advanced ability to effectively present complex finance related information both verbally and in writing in a clear and concise manner. Will be required to present financial data to a variety of stakeholders.
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities.
  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of internal control practices and their impact on protecting University resources.
  • Demonstrated computer skills and facility with using MS Excel (sorting, pivot tables, filtering, basic formulas)
  • Demonstrated advanced competence in the use of spreadsheet and database software in financial analysis, fiscal management and financial reports. (PeopleSoft, MS Access or equivalent)
  • Independent judgment and strong organization and communication skills and customer service focus.
  • Experience with data visualization techniques building charts and graphs in MS Excel, Powerpoint and other data visualization tools such as Tableau in order to succinctly and visually convey complex financial information to executive leadership.
