Nurse Practitioner

Job Description Summary The Department of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery, Division of Otology is seeking an Advanced Practice Provider (APP). The APP will assist attending physicians in clinic and provide care as an independent practitioner. Responsibilities include evaluating new and follow‑up patients, performing histories and physical exams, conducting in‑office procedures, ordering ancillary tests, patient education, prescribing medications, and coordinating care across inpatient and outpatient settings. Responsibilities Provide direct patient care through comprehensive history, physical examination, and assessment of diagnostic results. Diagnose and manage common ear diseases, perform cerumen removal, myringotomy, middle ear injection, external ear biopsy, and nasal foreign body removal. Conduct rigid and flexible nasal endoscopy and anterior/posterior nasal packing. Incise and drain simple abscesses/hematomas and perform wound debridement and dressing changes. Initiate referrals, consult with supervising physicians, document and bill for services. Apply evidence‑based decision‑making and participate in quality/improvement activities, research, accreditation, and compliance efforts. Engage in professional development through organizations, continuing education, and potential precepting of students. Travel to Charleston – Downtown, East Cooper, and North Charleston clinics as needed. Requirements Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant program and current PA licensure or eligibility for licensure, or completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program and current APRN licensure. Preferred Specializations: AGPNP/ANP (Adult Gerontology NP), Adult NP, or FNP (Family NP). Ability to evaluate patients aged 13 years to death, with stable chronic disease management or primary care across the lifespan. Licensure & Certifications Basic Life Support (BLS). Application for DHEC and DEA licenses completed before first day if applicable. Duties Takes comprehensive history and performs physical examinations. Evaluates and treats based on history, examination, radiology, laboratory and other diagnostic results pursuant to the practice agreement. Performs therapeutic procedures as approved: diagnosis and management of common ear diseases, removal of cerumen or foreign body, myringotomy, middle ear injection, external ear biopsy, removal of nasal foreign body, nasal endoscopy, nasal packing, incision and drainage, wound debridement and dressing changes. Initiates referrals and consults with supervising physicians. Documents and bills for direct care provided. Utilizes current research and evidence‑based decision‑making in all clinical practice. Participates in quality/performance improvement activities and clinical research. Supports accreditation, compliance, and regulatory activities of the organization. Demonstrates professional practice through participation in professional organizations and continuing education. Precepts students and facilitates learning for new team members. Physical Requirements Continuous standing, walking, and sitting; ability to bend, kneel, climb stairs, reach, and perform repetitive hand and arm motions. Must maintain 20/40 vision corrected, work in a latex‑safe environment. Frequently lift, lower, push, pull, or carry objects up to 50 lb unassisted, exert up to 50 lb of force, and lift from 36 in. to overhead 25 lb. May work in dusty or confined spaces. Supervision The APP will be assigned a Primary Supervising/Collaborating Physician employed by MUSC and will report directly to this physician.
