Responsibilities Job Summary Supervises, assesses, plans, coordinates, facilitates, and evaluates patient care and staff development; determines and maintains unit or program needs and standards (using nursing process and evidence-based information). Assumes responsibility and accountability for incorporating the vision, values, mission, and critical goals of the organization into job performance. Assists the Clinical Director in the management of the unit's assigned staff and patient population. Provides direct patient care according to unit/program needs and collaborates with physicians in executing the medical plan of care. All RN staff who have direct responsibility for the care of stroke patients must have knowledge of: stroke symptoms and warning signs; protocols and pathways used to identify, evaluate and manage stroke patients; NIHSS; Stroke Alert activation and protocol; stroke quality indicators; available stroke patient education materials and community resources; educational requirements; Stroke Center website resources. Essential Functions Oversees staff and ensures adequate patient care, including hiring/onboarding, evaluating, managing performance, coaching, and developing employees; ensures productivity, quality of work, and alignment with mission, vision, and values. Establishes a care plan or contributes to an existing plan, including administering medication, checking dosages, avoiding interactions, starting/maintaining/discontinuing IV lines, administering therapies and treatments, observing and recording patient status, and consulting with physicians and other clinicians. Ensures compliance with policies and financial stewardship regarding department budget development and maintenance. Serves as a resource to staff, patients, families, caregivers, physicians, and visitors to improve patient experience and clinical outcomes; promotes a healthy work environment. Teaches patients and families about managing illnesses, post-treatment/home care needs, diet, nutrition, exercise, and self-administration of medications/therapy. Facilitates inter/intra-departmental collaboration, communication, and problem solving; participates in policy revisions and committees; contributes to goals and action planning for the unit. Contributes to recruitment and retention of staff through positive role-modeling and engagement in preceptor/mentor programs; coordinates educational and professional activities related to department needs. Regularly rounds with physicians, patients, or families to facilitate quality practice and improve patient experience; utilizes nursing process and evidence-based practice to provide care and evaluate the plan of care. Initiates and supports quality improvement initiatives and uses resources effectively. Directs staff in applying the nursing process; provides direction and coordinates patient care; promotes independent functioning among employees. Performs other duties as assigned. Education Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited NLN/CCNE institution; legally licensed to work as a registered nurse in the State of Arizona. All staff who have direct responsibility for the care of stroke patients: refer to addendum for stroke-specific education requirements.
