School Nurse (RN) Substitute (On-Call)

Rochambeau, The French International School of Washington, DC (Rochambeau), has an opening for a School Nurse (RN) Substitute - On-Call for the 2026-2027 school year.

Reports to: Primary or Secondary School Director

Job Type: Part-time; non-exempt; intermittent/on-call schedule

Salary Information: The compensation for this position is $40.00-50.00 per hour, paid in biweekly installments. Compensation for this position is calculated in accordance with the years of applicable experience provided.

Benefits: This position is intermittent and on-call, and is not eligible for any additional benefits or time off.

POSITION SUMMARY
The School Nurse (RN) Substitute provides expert health services and one-on-one care to our diverse student body when the regular school nurse is not available. The School Nurse Substitute is responsible for managing the health office, medication management and administration, providing direct nursing care, and serving as the primary health resource for the entire school community, in support of Rochambeau’s core values and mission.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

• Provide first aid and emergency care for student and staff accidents and illnesses;

• Administer prescription medications and over-the-counter (OTC) medications in accordance with school policy, and specialized nursing care procedures under physician’s orders;

• Manage and administer care based on Individual Health Care Plans (IHCPs) and Individual Emergency Care Plans (IECPs), including the management of chronic conditions such as asthma, diabetes, seizures, and severe allergies;

• Maintain accurate and confidential student immunization records and document all student health encounters in the school’s electronic health record system;

• Communicate clearly and professionally with a variety of audiences, including students, staff, visitors, and parents/guardians;

• Positively support the school’s mission, policies, and practices, and work collaboratively in a professional organization;

• Maintain consistent, punctual attendance;

• Commitment to Rochambeau's Vision, Mission, Values, and Strategic Plan;

• Perform additional related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position.

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Requirements:

• Valid, unrestricted license to practice as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the State of Maryland;

• Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing;

• Current Basic Life Support (BLS)/CPR/First Aid Certification;

• Knowledge of current practices for managing common childhood illnesses and chronic diseases.

• Well-developed and effective communication skills (oral and written) and strong human relations skills; ability to work well with other teachers, support staff, parents, and students;

• Good organization and time management skills;

• Ability to maintain confidentiality and security of information;

• Regular, predictable, and reliable attendance at work;

• Basic computer, mathematical, and writing skills with attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN) or related field.

• Two or more years of experience in school nursing, pediatrics, community, or public health nursing settings.

• Bilingual proficiency in English and French is highly desired.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This position operates within a school and health office environment. The role requires prolonged periods of sitting, walking, or standing. The nurse must be able to respond quickly to medical emergencies in various locations on campus. The position requires extensive use of computers and office equipment, and the occasional ability to lift, carry, or move students or equipment up to 40 pounds.
