School Police Officer
To support and facilitate the educational process with the Dougherty County School System by providing a safe and secure environment through the enforcement of state laws, the preservation of public order, the protection of life and property, and the prevention, detection or investigation of crime.
Qualifications
High School Diploma or equivalent; Two years as a Georgia POST certified peace officer, or able to complete the State of Georgia POST peace officer basic mandate training course within 12 months of employment; Must possess a valid Georgia driver's license; Must be bondable in accordance with Georgia Code Section 36-8-3, and must be capable of qualifying with a firearm on the existing firearms qualifications course(s); Must be at least 21 years old, and a citizen of the United States; Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate.
Skills and Abilities
Excellent communication and organizational skills; Ability to pass a background investigation and physical exams; Excellent computer skills using Microsoft, Google, and other programs.
Performance Responsibilities
Provides security and safety for the assigned schools and during summer school; Works closely with school administrators to provide a safe environment for students. This includes daily planning/briefing, reviewing/revising the school safety plans, supervising students, and monitoring the campus; Enforces board policies and rules, state and local laws, and takes appropriate actions when violations are reported or observed; Works and interacts with students to present a positive image of law enforcement personnel; Prepares clear, accurate, and informative reports of incidents and activities involving the schools; Testifies and presents evidence in criminal court or at school disciplinary tribunal hearings; Follows Federal and State Laws, as well as the Policies of the Board of Education; Works with school principals and other parties within the school system in determining needs and implementing responsive programs related to school security and criminal activities; Provides leadership within the school system by mentoring and projecting a positive role model for students and others.; Monitors and reports incidents of criminal gang activity as defined by Georgia Code Section 16-15-3 which occur on or adjacent to a school campus or other building of an educational facility; Conducts zoning verification investigations; Conducts initial and follow-up investigations of criminal and administrative incidents within the school(s) assigned including incidents involving school transportation; Develops clues or information which may lead to obtaining arrest/search warrants by contacting and interviewing all relevant witnesses and other parties involved; Makes arrest as necessary using only the amount of force necessary to affect the said arrest; Assists local law enforcement agencies in matters related to criminal or administrative matters involving students or other school personnel; Testifies in administrative and criminal hearings, Juvenile, State, and Superior Courts; Conducts safety and security surveys periodically with the assistance of school administrators and reviews results with the Chief of School Police; Transports students home from school/summer school / G.R.E.A.T. Program because of illness, suspension, etc.; Acts as a first responder in an emergency situation involving an injured person on school grounds; Informs the Chief of Police of all situations resulting in the injury of a student, teacher, or other faculty members as well as any serious criminal offense or other matter deemed important that occurs on school grounds; Makes routine patrols of assigned facilities including the building, parking lots, and equipment, checks for security, vandalism, or casualty losses, and prepares reports as required; Opens and secures school system properties for the facilities department during school term and summer months; Monitors visitors and other persons within assigned facilities to ensure proper identity and business purpose for the safety of students and faculty; Assists in crowd control and security assignments at various public gatherings including but not limited to, Board of Education Meetings, athletic events, and incident scenes; Investigates traffic accidents that occur on school system property and prepare proper reports as required by law; Maintains firearm proficiency by qualification on the course(s) designated by the Chief of Police; Maintains P.O.S.T. Certification and specialized training in accordance with job requirements; Coordinates security needs with local law enforcement agencies as determined by the principal, athletic director, or other designees for school-related activities and events; Participates in training programs to increase skills and proficiency related to assignments; Reviews current trends, developments, literature, and technical sources for information related to job responsibilities; Performs other related duties as assigned by the Chief of Police.
