Patient Care Manager-Surgery

The Patient Care Manager of Surgery at Forrest General Hospital is accountable and responsible for the 24-hour operation of managing, guiding, and delivering quality patient care. The Manager initiates, directs, and assists employees with developing, implementing, and adhering to performance initiatives to ensure safe and effective patient care is achieved and maintained. Overall, the Manager must exhibit strong leadership qualities, critical thinking abilities for managers, and strong oral/written communications skills. Effectively the manager must collaborate with Specialty Coordinators, Patient Care Coordinators, Supervisors within operating room as well as the entire Surgical Services department. The manager will demonstrate knowledge and skills to appropriately communicate and interact with the patients, families, and visitors of all age groups while being sensitive to their cultural and religious beliefs. She/he reports directly to the Director of Surgical Services.

- Demonstrates the ability to effectively communicate with patients, physicians, and co-workers (managers, directors, and administration team) in a manner harmonious and centered on customer service and application of positive language policies.
- Provides for exceptional patient and coworker experiences by following our standards of practice of always using positive language.
- Demonstrates overall independence and exercises sound judgment in interactions with physicians and other members of the Surgical Services team.
- Promotes a positive work environment with the entire OR team.
- Collaborates with all members of the OR team by actively communicating and comprehensively reporting pertinent information to the Director of Surgical Services or Executive Administrative team as needed.

- Role models, both fair and consistent leadership skills for effective team dynamics.
- Performs job duties required of an OR staff nurse in events of staffing issues or emergency events.
- Guides and leads the Specialty Coordinators, Patient Care Coordinators, Supervisors, and employees of the Operating Room.
- Maintains and utilizes cost-effective budgetary methods while supporting safe quality patient care.
- Promotes the adherence of the organization's established Compliance Program, Standards of Conduct, and the We CARE philosophy.
- Leads, reports, and serves on hospital committees as appointed.
- Collaborating with the Educator and Director for Surgical Services to create and implement the annual competency program for all employee roles within surgical services.
- Delegates and/or performs yearly employee evaluations.
- Develops and /or supervises the staff's schedule.
- Performing the discipline of employees as needed to assure compliance to meet standards of quality patient care.
- Performing and/or monitoring weekly functions of KRONOS as needed in the absence of the timekeeper.
- Works with Same-Day Surgery and the Post Anesthesia Care Unit to ensure quality, timely, and effective patient flow.
- Implements processes to hinge on the improvement strategies for enhanced departmental functioning.
- Assists with controlling labor cost by adjusting staffing patterns.
- Assessable to staff through the open door policy related to staff issues or concerns.
- Works with Quality Management and Environmental Services Directors to ensure that the clinical area is appropriately maintained.
- Assists the Director with the development of policies/procedures/job descriptions of the operating room and Forrest General Hospital.
- Responsible for monitoring clinical staff for compliance with facility policies and practices, procedures, and quality program.
- Supervises and guides the Equipment and Supply Supervisor to assist with maintaining proper maintenance of equipment, inventory levels, and cost containment practices.
- Collaborates with the OR educator for employee orientation and annual competency checkoffs.
- Handles OTIS reports of the operating room clinical variances and coordinates with Director, Quality and Risk Manager as required.
- Communicates clinical practice variances of all employees and physicians to the Director and administration in a timely manner.
- Communicates with staff through Huddles, staff meetings, and emails.
- Exhibits necessary professional, technical, or specialized expertise and skills required for the role of the peri-operative nurse following AORN and other regulatory standards of practice.
- Facilitates communication and collaboration among unit staff and other departments and units regarding issues related to patient care.
- Counsels employees on performance issues administer initial corrective actions, collaborates in monitoring attendance issues.
- Demonstrates expertise to manage the OR board as needed, inclusive of making assignments and adjusting to the dynamic workflow.
- Manages staff to ensure participation at competency events, staff meetings, and educational opportunities.
- Displays the experience to interpret data to improve patient care, decrease patient or staff risks,
- Follows and meets the State and Federal Guidelines to include the DNV standards are applied within all areas of responsibility.
- Oversees Surgery staff in planning, implementing, and evaluating the delivery of patient care according to identified patients needs.
- Communicates with other hospital departments, as necessary, to resolve operational problems and exhibit effective use of hospital resources while delivering quality patient care.
- Participates in ongoing quality improvement activities including promoting situational awareness, assisting with audits as needed, and using teachable moments to guide employees.
- Implements opportunities to restrict exposure to infectious pathogens and communicable conditions, and to promote a safe and confidential atmosphere for the patient and staff.
- Demonstrates interpersonal skills and competency in leadership, supervision, and management of staff.
- Fosters employee engagement by demonstrating active listening, requesting and acknowledging feedback, making equitable decisions, providing rationale when appropriate, and supporting departmental and organizational goals.
- Forecasts the needs of employees and proactively offers assistance.
- Exhibits fiscal year accountability by taking ownership of time management, decreasing waste of both time and supplies, and improving cost-effectiveness.
- Overall, functions as a mentor, resource for the unit, address organizational conflict and applies tools to effectively resolve concerns, complaints, or dispute with patients, families, physicians, and other interprofessional healthcare team members.
- Proactively explores possibilities to enhance knowledge and learning towards expertise.
- Maintains all HealthStream assignments.
- Provides feedback to the Director of Surgical Services regarding patient care, budgetary, and strategic planning opportunities for improvement.
- Overall, behavior and communications demonstrate a positive attitude, personal initiative, and motivation to achieve the goals of the department.
- Demonstrates organizational, interpersonal, and time management skills.
- Participates in all competencies planned for the job role prior to deadlines.
- Complies with the Surgical Services and Forrest General Hospital policies.
- Follows the policies in the Employee Handbook.
- The spreading of rumors and gossip creates unnecessary turmoil, weakens working relationships, and is contrary to the spirit of the hospital and is prohibited.
- Uses "We Care" philosophy in daily communication.
- Required appropriate use of department's communication app.

- Graduate of a recognized non-online RN program with a Bachelor's degree in nursing required.
- Two to five years post-graduate progress in nursing with demonstrated leadership behaviors required.
- Two to five years OR experience required.
- Licensed RN able to practice within the State of MS
