Job Title: Med Surg/Tele Registered Nurse Profession: Registered Nurse Specialty: Med Surg/Telemetry Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 12 Hours Nights Hours per Shift: 12 Experience: Minimum 1 year acute care experience License: Active Registered Nurse license Certifications: BLS Must-Have: - Comfort with complex patients - Experience with drips - Telemetry awareness Description: Unit consists of 27 beds. Nurse-to-patient ratios are Day/Eve 1:4-5 and Night 1:6. There may be higher ratios if working short (up to 1:7). Common diagnoses include oncology/hematology patients, general medical cases, gastrointestinal bleeds, pulmonary embolisms/deep vein thrombosis, sepsis, congestive heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pneumonia, failure to thrive, and weakness. No oncology or chemotherapy knowledge is required. Internal nursing resources will support treatment needs. RN's are required to titrate drips, including Insulin, Heparin, Cardizem, Nitro, Amiodarone, Octreotide, and blood transfusions. Central telemetry technicians will monitor patients and read strips; however, nurses are expected to be telemetry aware. Charge nurses and House Supervisors are available on all shifts. Charge nurses take a modified patient assignment, typically 1:2-3 during days and 1:4 during nights. Travelers may be asked to step into a charge role if comfortable, particularly on nights. Nurse aides are present, with ratios of 1:7-9 during day/evening shifts and 1:14 overnight. Respiratory therapy oversees multiple units and is available in-house 24/7 for continuous CPAP, BiPAP, and high flow oxygen needs. Scheduling requests will be accommodated as best as possible, but block scheduling cannot be guaranteed. Weekend requirements include every other weekend, with holiday requirements of two out of three during the winter and every other holiday during other times. There is no call or standby requirement. Floating may occur within Med-Surg units, typically done in 4-hour increments. Currently, any color of scrub is acceptable, provided there are no logos from other health systems. All clinicians must clock in and out while on duty.
