Senior Staff Engineer - Performance and Observability

Position Overview At GEICO, we are seeking an experienced Senior Staff Engineer to build high‑performance, low‑maintenance, zero‑downtime platforms and applications. The role involves leading the transformation from a traditional IT model to a tech organization, driving automation, cloud operations, containerization, and CI/CD pipelines. Responsibilities Improve monitoring, observability, and performance of deployed systems. Design, deploy, and manage OpenStack‑based cloud environments. Develop and maintain automation scripts and playbooks using Python, Ansible, and GitHub Workflows. Implement and optimize CI/CD pipelines for infrastructure and application delivery. Support containerization initiatives (Docker, Kubernetes). Troubleshoot and resolve issues in cloud and automation workflows. Collaborate with development, operations, and security teams. Share best practices and improve processes within and across teams. Participate in on‑call and operational support as needed. Mentor junior engineers. Qualifications 8+ years of professional experience in cloud engineering, platform administration, or infrastructure automation. 8+ years of experience with OpenStack or similar cloud platforms. 8+ years of experience with Python and Ansible. 8+ years of experience with CI/CD systems and containerization technologies. Experience with hybrid or multi‑cloud environments (AWS, GCP, Azure, or on‑premises) is a plus. Experience with low level virtualization technologies (QEMU/libvirt) is a plus. Strong experience with monitoring, logging, alerting, and observability tools such as Grafana and Prometheus. Performance tuning proficiency. Proficiency in Python programming or scripting. Strong experience with Ansible for automation and configuration management. Hands‑on experience with CI/CD tools and workflows (e.g., Jenkins, GitHub Actions, Argo CD). Good understanding of networking and security best practices in cloud deployments. Excellent troubleshooting and problem‑solving skills. Strong communication and collaboration abilities. Education Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or equivalent education or work experience. Compensation Annual Salary: $110,000.00 - $260,000.00 (range is a general guideline; final offer depends on role, experience, education, location, and market).
