Job Description
The Surgical Services Registered Nurse plays a vital role in delivering exceptional patient care within a hospital's surgical department. This position involves providing compassionate, skilled care to patients undergoing surgical procedures, ensuring their safety and comfort throughout the process. The nurse collaborates closely with a multidisciplinary team, including surgeons, anesthesiologists, and other healthcare professionals, to create and implement personalized care plans tailored to each patient's unique needs.
Key Responsibilities
- Communicate patient status promptly to interdisciplinary team members.
- Accurately transcribe and relay physician orders.
- Anticipate surgical team needs to facilitate efficient procedures and minimize patient trauma.
- Participate in maintaining surgical schedules and timely starts.
- Understand anesthetic agents and assist with anesthesia as needed.
- Prepare and manage surgical equipment and supplies.
- Assist with record keeping, procedure charging, and quality improvement initiatives.
- Perform pre-operative assessments and complete surgical checklists.
- Ensure adherence to sterile techniques and AORN guidelines.
- Provide safe post-operative care and carry out immediate physician orders.
- Administer and document medications and IV therapy safely.
- Assess and document patients' physical, psychological, spiritual, and social needs upon admission.
- Educate patients and families about disease processes and treatment plans at an understandable level.
- Implement and modify individualized interdisciplinary care plans.
- Engage in ongoing learning about new surgical procedures and operating room practices.
- Utilize resources effectively and consult with physicians and interdisciplinary services as needed.
- Mentor and orient new staff members.
- Maintain accurate documentation of nursing interventions and patient responses.
Education and Certification Requirements
- Graduate of an accredited nursing program with current Registered Nurse licensure valid in the applicable state.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification per American Heart Association standards.
- Advanced Life Support (ALS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certifications required within one year of hire.
- Completion of Mandatory Reporter training within six months of employment.
- Compliance with all federal, state, and professional licensure and regulatory training requirements.
