Associate Scientist, Chemical Engineering Research & Development (Onsite)

Merck's Chemical Engineering Research & Development Department seeks an Associate Scientist to design and execute experiments for small molecule and cross-modality active pharmaceutical ingredient process development, scale-up, and technology transfer. The role involves hands-on work across laboratory, kilo lab, pilot plant, and manufacturing sites with approximately 10–15% travel.

Responsibilities

• Design, plan, and execute process development and scale-up experiments for API and cross-modality therapeutics
• Perform batch processing, equipment setups, and troubleshooting at laboratory, kilo lab, and pilot plant scales
• Ensure compliance with safety, GMP, and environmental requirements during production activities
• Support technology transfer and introduction of new processes to internal and external manufacturing sites

Requirements

• BS or MS in chemical or biochemical engineering from accredited institution by June 2027
• Lab-based research or process development experience in chemical engineering
• Familiarity with pharmaceutical unit operations including reaction engineering, separations, crystallizations
• Strong communication, collaboration, organizational, and time management skills
• Knowledge of process scale-up, technology transfer, or statistical experimental design preferred
• Direct pharmaceutical drug substance process development experience preferred

Compensation: $71,900.00 - $113,200.00 base
