Electronics Technician III (S)

This position is in the Traffic Services Unit in Stanly County. This position will be responsible for the supervision, management, and development activities of the signal technicians in Division 10 Traffic Operations. Employee will supervise technical repair and efficient operation of ITS devices, including Closed Loop System repairs and maintenance. Work is performed without immediate supervision. This position will coordinate contractor activities and technician inspection, as well as investigate engineer and citizen requests and report a solution that will meet the MUTCD standards and NCDOT standard specifications. Employee will conduct performance reviews (NCVIP) and prioritize activities of signal technicians' daily work. Assist in 811 fiber locations using locating equipment and roadway drawings to mark buried fiber. The ability to train personnel on and operate a 24K signal bucket truck is needed. This position involves skilled work in the diagnosis of malfunctions in both microprocessor-based traffic signal controllers and cabinets to the module level. Employee will assist in installation and inspection of all aspects of traffic signal installations. A high level of knowledge of the principles in applying safe and efficient practices in the installation, alteration, repair and maintenance of electrical equipment and vehicles is necessary. This position will use various electrical and electronic testing equipment to troubleshoot malfunctioning traffic control equipment. Employee will conduct research and development of new technologies. Employee will be responsible for diagnosis of malfunctions in traffic signal equipment, etc. Schedule and plan maintenance duties while working within the proposed budget restraints for the Department and monitor expenditures within budgetary guidelines using SAP. Employee will be expected to work nights and weekends as needed for emergency and planned operations in all types of weather conditions.

Additional Expectations: Must be able to use and operate aerial bucket truck up to 50 feet in height. Perform assigned tasks and understand and follow both oral and written instruction, comply with all safety rules and policies to maintain a safer work environment. Employee must possess the ability to perform manual and physical labor involved in the installation and removal of traffic signs and other traffic control devices. Considerable knowledge of MUTCD and NCDOT traffic signal specifications. Ability to trouble shoot nonstandard traffic electronic equipment, or equipment with incomplete or missing documentation. Must possess the ability to work in environmental conditions which include extreme cold and hot outside conditions, exposure to noise, dust, asphalt, traffic and heavy construction. The selected candidate must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Either possession of a current Class A Commercial Driver's License with N endorsement on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver's License must be obtained through completion of an on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing required. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.

Salary Grade and Salary Range: NC13 / $50,088 - $87,654

Management prefers applicants with the following:

  • Working knowledge of the principles and practices applied to the installation, revision, repair and maintenance of electrical and electronic traffic control system.
  • Working knowledge of MUTCD and NCDOT traffic signal specifications.
  • Demonstrated ability to read and interpret wiring diagrams, schematics, traffic signals, intersection design, standard specifications and maintenance manuals associated with traffic signal equipment.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot nonstandard traffic equipment with incomplete or missing documentation.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, schedule and carry out work assignments effectively with minimal technical supervision.

Associate's degree in electronics from an appropriately accredited institution and three (3) years of progressive experience in the repair and maintenance of complex electronic systems including some responsibility for the design of electronic apparatus; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Based on the nature of work performed, may require appropriate licensure by the governing board or commission.
